See, I like both of these shooters, GW2 and BFN, they also have their own advantages and disadvantages.
With toxicity, I only think that BFN seemed more toxic because of the addition of expressions and emotes, which players could abuse to be toxic towards others. There are also those players who salt switch and that go the obnoxiously annoying characters, such as Steam Blaster and Brainium Basher. GW2, well taunting is almost the only option. Your insight into that has helped me to think differently - and in a good way.
Popularity, I know that many players went back to GW2. I can understand that, in many ways, this game was a major failure. Still, I wanted it to improve. I still do, but I do not see that happening at any point. Unless these promised Bug Fixes and Balancing Changes happen.
I really liked events such as Boss Hunts and Community Challenges in GW2. They were loads of fun, but of course they got discontinued (or at least, it seems that way). BFN adds very cool new mechanics, interesting new characters, Legendary Upgrades and so on, which I really like.
Each shooter has their ups and downs, but I do personally prefer BFN over GW2. That said, I still really like GW2 as well.
