Sunflower Guide of awesomeness?
Hey everyone I've seen the sunflower come up a few times since that latest patch. After a lot of playing I think the sunflower is generally in a much better place right now. This is the class I main for the time being and thought I would give a brief "how to" on the different variants. This is by no means comprehensive and opinions differ on how each class/variant should be played so just take my suggestions with a grain of salt and have fun.
1. Base Sunflower - I feel the base sunflower is best played at medium range skirmishes. I have the most luck when laying down suppressing fire and try to avoid any up close confrontations unless I have a Citron or Chompers nearby. I feel the base is great in all game modes and is a very versatile character. Whenever an imp appears and I can I try to switch to power beam mode and burn the mech down as quickly as I can. This sunflower can be played well at long distances as well because of her rapid fire, pretty fast projectile speed, and great accuracy. I do well against super brains and scientist at medium to long range and get absolutely murdered by them up close. My preferred upgrades are damage, ammo upgrade, reload speed.
2. Vampire Sunflower - This is a very high risk high reward combat oriented sunflower. I have seen people do very well on this sunflower especially if they have a high accuracy. I do not play this sunflower when I want to spend a lot of time healing and reviving because the 25 health reduction makes it less likely ill live long enough to get off a clutch revive. I like to play this sunflower on roof tops of high points at mid range and just shoot everything that moves. Very similar to the base variant with her gun reliability. This class does great against all zombies, in my opinion, at medium and to a lesser extent long range. I think vampire tends to get murdered quickly at close ranges. My favorite upgrades are vampiric , ammo upgrade , reload speed upgrade.
3. Mystic Sunflower - This sunflower can charge similar to the future cactus and electro citron except its max level charge feels much faster than any other plant with a charge up. I play this class very similar to the base class and you can pretty much just read what I wrote there. I prefer reload, ammo, damage upgrades.
4. Power Flower - This is probably my personal third favorite upgrade. I play this character a lot in game modes like suburbination and turf takeover. I don't play this one as much in games like team vanquish because i feel that it doesn't play to her strengths. I prefer to damage, ammo, and reload speed upgrades. The arc damage is great and her base damage isn't too bad either. I like to heal the snipers (cactus and citrons) on the team while laying support fire onto points that have a lot of zombies attacking or defending. This class does not shine in 1v1 situations because of her lower single shot damage.
5. Fire Flower - I play this one more on team vanquish because I feel it does better 1v1 than other sunflower with the exception of maybe the vampire sunflower. I like to run the reload, ammo, and fire upgrades on the sunflower. I like to stay medium range where I feel I have the most impact and occasionally rush an imp or engineer because I think this sunflowers damage can be surprising. Play safe though because classes with a lot of HP can take awhile to burn down.
6. Shadow Flower - A great 1 v 1 class, has a very fast fire rate and maybe a fast than normal projectile speed compared to other sunflowers. It's downside is it does much less damage at range. I like to play this one on tighter maps where things can be a bit more chaotic. In my opinion the reload speed upgrades and ammo upgrades are a must because of this variants fast fire nature. I usually take the damage upgrade because this sunflower needs it, however I have had some success with the health upgrade on this sunflower, sometimes a few extra HP can make a difference.
7. Metal Sunflower - Very awesome sunflower, let's you play however you want. You get 50 extra HP at the expense of a barely noticeable move speed reduction. Great at nabbing clutch revives and can survive imp punts assuming health is full. On this class I like to run the HP buff, ammo upgrade, and damage upgrade. This class fares much better at close range than other classes too because of all the extra HP, I feel this is the best starter sunflower class.
8. Sun Pharaoh - I think this variant is very under appreciated. It does amazing up close DPS and I think it has the best accuracy of any sunflower. I love taking damage, reload speed, and ammo upgrade on this one. I play this one as a wild card because no one really expects her high damage bursts. No one plays this class and she is super fun. She still struggles against scientists at close range but does much better into super hero zombies especially with headshots at close range. If you have good accuracy this is probably the highest single target DPS sunflower.
9. Alien Sunflower - My second favorite but maybe most played sunflower. I play this one different depending on what game mode I'm in. I'f I'm in turf take over or suburbination I take the reload upgrade, damage radius upgrade, and explosion life upgrade. I just sit on a high point and fire shot after shot into and mob of zombies, especially if they are on low ground dog piling a point. I don't even have to hit and the explosion will still go off and slowly drain the HP of any zombie inside the cloud. and the cloud damage stacks so it can be a lot of damage that adds up very quickly if you stack your clouds. She can be very OP in gnome bomb because the zones for that game are super tiny when the zombies have to defuse a bomb, she can pretty much kill anything that steps up to the bomb to disarm it.
On team vanquish I take other upgrades, I take reload speed, zoom, and health regen. Mainly because her cloud damage is the same no matter what your range so I try to play her as more of a counter sniper. A few clouds at a hero zombie or pirate zombie will generally make them move. Very fun to play in any game mode.
10. Stuffy Flower - For whatever reason this is my favorite variant. I love the sounds and rainbows it constantly generates. the main benefit of Stuffy Flower is that when you get a kill of any kind healing sun is produced from the vanquished played. This can be great because you gain a lot of flexibility with your healing (assuming you can get the vanquishes). You can stick back and fire from medium range while healing your pea shooters while getting heals for Citrons and Chompers if you get the kills with the sun drops. It's a very fun variant to play, however some may find the noise it generates very annoying. I run this sunflower with ammo upgrades, damage upgrades, and reload upgrades.
Well that is pretty much all I have. Most my builds and strats are the same and experience from playing will definitely help more that this guide, it's more of something to help people get their feet wet with sunflowers. I welcome your thoughts/opinions on my suggestions especially since there are people here who are far better with sunflower and have far more experience.
enjoy!
