As a acorn rider on an oak. The scientist instant kills the rider with the steam upgrade
- TheSprinter856 years agoHero
@The-evil-jok3r I didn’t know that, but if it is true, it means that if an Oak with Acorn Passengers come in contact with a Steam Blaster Scientist, that Scientist can easily destroy the Acorns and then the Oak, meaning that the Steam Blaster player can easily get more vanquishes.
Everything that I have heard about Steam Blaster so far has screamed in my face: OP!
I prefer melee and close-range attacks and abilities over ranged. That’s why I really looked forward to getting Steam Blaster when I heard about it. I still don’t have it but I am close. That’s why it’s a shame that it seems way too overpowered. A plant coming into close combat with a Steam Blaster is unlikely to survive, from what I have seen. I don’t particularly think that I should use this upgrade very much until it gets nerfed (hence why it is a shame).
Overall, I hope that this upgrade gets nerfed and soon!

Had a few more sessions since the last post to see it calms down. But no, teleporting self healing steam blasting scientists are ruining any fun in the game for me.
You can barely see the steam too.
I'm ducking out of this game until it is nerfed as I play games for fun not frustration. I have unlocked the steam blaster now but like other posters I am not going to use it as it will be unfair on other players.

As @The-evil-jok3r pointed out as well, it's already not as useful being an Oak rider as a Space Station rider as you can be picked off individually, whereas the cadets on the station share a health pool so the AoE steam effect is extremely powerful against the Acorns. This is a problem against Electric Slide too as their bolts arc to the riders and since they lost their armor, it makes it closer to a liability than an asset riding on top of an Oak.
The idea of the weapon is fine, although any AoE effects that linger can be extremely nasty if they do so much damage. In game modes with objectives (TT, Gnome Bomb, Suburbination), having such massive area denial damage can borderline break the game mode. Out of the 3 legendary upgrades we've seen so far, I'd have to say this one is the most powerful and difficult to deal with.

@34975634954957 yep have to agree... I have used it in Pvp ... it actually almost feels like cheating in some way (and believe me I need all the help I can get) but it just doesn't feel right. And I have noticed a LOT of people using the exploit with it too sadly.
- 6 years ago@34975634954957 Yes, agree with you - PvP is unbearable & not worth the frustration. The steam definitely needs to be more visible - one of many things that need looking at with Scientist.
Adjusting to playing against & assessing the balance of a strong legendary upgrade might not be so infuriating were it not for the fact that there are still balance concerns with numerous other characters & plants being a character down. Steam blaster is just adding insult to injury. - 6 years ago
I ran up against a couple of Steam Blasting Scientists in Boss Team Vanquish earlier today and while they got me a couple of times, I was playing Acorn, I found that I could usually take them out from a distance if I kept my eye out for them so they didn’t strike me personally as being unmanageable in that handful of games.
Whether or not the build seems to be game breaking is likely due to the person players involved and the circumstances at the time.

@realitysquared You may be right, and as with all these things as the players get used to having the steam whatnot about perhaps people will adapt and find ways to counteract the danger. It still remains, however, that in skilled hands the scientist upgrade is deadly. And a team with multiple scientists is not fun to play against.
The zombies continue to get stronger while the plants are wallowing about, needing a skilled and coordinated team to gain a win in many cases.
Hopefully in future updates the plants will get the long awaited new character and legendary upgrades that help address the imbalance between teams 🤞 🙂 - 6 years ago@asabaida A steam-blasting Scientist with a Wizard on his head isn't much fun either.....
Oh yes... lets not forget that little fun gem 😃
- 6 years ago@asabaida I agree that the Plant team doesn’t seem to have a lot going for it. While I don’t know if I’d call the Zombies a “stronger” team I do think that the Zombies have characters which seem more desirable to play, with most of them being more fun (at least to me) and having move sets or suitable strategies which seem more easily accessible to new players.

I'm going to unlock this upgrade tomorrow so I'll be able to give out some proper feedback after I get it. I plan on testing this upgrade it in PvE regions mostly. This upgrade seems like a huge nightmare to deal with and I don't particularly want to add to all the chaos. So I probably won't use it a whole lot in PvP unless it gets nerfed or I take a healing approach - meaning I will only Steam Blaster plants if they get in my face, rather than flanking.
- 6 years ago@realitysquared I think Zombies have often appealed to a higher percentage of players throughout all of the games - a bit more "cool" or something.
I've played more plants throughout GW & GW2 (once maxed) mainly because I like playing fair-ish lobbies, so usually end up swapping to plants to balance team numbers. It's always been extremely rare that I've needed to switch the other way.
I enjoy playing Zombies in BFN probably more than I did in the other games, the characters are fun but I do think a big part of the appeal for others is simply that whether it's down to their kit, mobility, damage (whatever), it is far easier to vanquish & dominate with them.
That needs addressing somehow - the Plant characters should be just as appealing & their teams shouldn't need to be near-full of elite, strategic players to be able to compete - and that's so often how it seems. - Iron_Guard86 years agoLegend
I'll likely unlock this Friday after completing this week's character challenge so have no firsthand experience using it but the few times I have seen it in PvP, it's definitely difficult to deal with unless you can keep yourself at longer range but with those instant teleports that scientists have, it's not always easy.
And indeed, it does seem zombies are more popular right now. I like both sides as always, but the zombies do have more appeal to me right now, just in how they play and some of the new costumes I really like (the Electric Slide Valkyrie costume is a particular favorite). I hope the next new class is not only a plant, but is fun to play as well, as that would help a little. There are a few lingering issues that need to be addressed that would help as well.
Wolfy recently made a video on the games, which I can't link here as he does use a lot of profanity, but as someone who loved the chemist from the prior GW games and looking forward to this Scientist upgrade, he pointed out how unfun it is to play against, so that's something to keep in mind; when someone who loves a particular playstyle finds that such a thing is problematic, it needs to be looked at.
- 6 years ago@TheSprinter85 i say crush people with it so it gets fixed sooner...they are probably lokking at numbers...I tried it for about 5 min to verify it's a joke to kill plants with it, then switched but I don't hate on people using it. Reminds me of old op super brainz...fly in from nowhere and wreck a whole plant team with half damage taken.
- 6 years ago@Iron_Guard8 Yeah the zombies have always been more fun to play. In GW1 plants just weren't as fun as zombies. BFN balances it out better I'd say, but still. Engineer is more fun than Rose, Scientist more fun than Sunflower, etc.
