Why am I unable to challenge my friend?

At the time of writing this (23/3/2020) I tried to play with my friend PvZ Heroes, a simple match against him as I was playing the game since a long time and he just downloaded it and wanted to play with him, however, it says that I can’t play against him because I need to “update the game” but the game is updated to the latest version, I tried to delete and re-install it again but it didn’t work, so I thought that it might be because I am using an iPhone and he is using a Samsung. Is it because of that? If anyone knows the answer please respond as soon as possible.
