Merge Academy sell prices

When playing merge academy, the number of gems you get when selling an item don’t make any sense. They increase by 1 gem with each merge and evolution. But this means that it’s more beneficial to sell two “lower” items for 2 gems each than to merge them and sell the higher item for 3 gems. This problem compounds as you continue to merge and evolve items.  If you have two items that sell for 4 gems each, if you merge them, they only sell for 5 gems, but are worth 8 individually. Unless you are trying to get something in particular, there is no benefit in continuing to merge items past their 2 gem sale price.

Yes, and sometimes I forget and merge just because they're flashing at me. Regret it every time!

I have also noticed this within the game. I think the only exception is with the purplish gems that appear after bubble items pop; you can merge those and you will end up with 16 instead of 25 (if I remember the math right). However, I think that the other main appeal to merging items even when you might end up with fewer gems is to free up space on the board. It doesn't mean they shouldn't increase the total earned for selling them ;) but I think this is the rationale: that there are other benefits.
