Beta feedback - Mass Transit System

  1. Railway items are needed everywhere but take too long to get. I won't pay for railway currency.
    1. Airport shipments, repairing disaster zones, war deliveries, etc
    2. This is a big slowdown and annoyance to Contest of Mayor (CoM) tasks
    3. Train deployment gives a small amount of currency and takes hours between deployments.
    4. Result is I need railway items for CoM tasks way faster than I can get them, and I won't buy railway currency. CoM is just slower and more annoying
  2. Adding railway is a fun idea but practically is a big headache
    1. I like the idea of mass transit. Fits the spirit of being a mayor of Sim City. Figure out how to give your citizens this benefit
    2. If you've spent a lot of time optimizing your city layout, you kind of have to blow things up
    3. E.g. you have to make some sacrifices, give up population boosting buildings to make way for railroad tracks and/or spread out your Residential Zones (RZs) to new areas.. but maybe you're out of space and or need new police stations etc.
    4. Couldn't the train stations be smaller? And or more flexible with positioning?
    5. Would have been cool to have a new layer like a subway that only minimally disrupted your existing layout.
    6. The way it is now, I'd rather skip it altogether. Especially because of point 3 below, but I can't because of point 1 above...
  3. The system is confusing
    1. It's unclear if there is any benefit to where you rout your railroad. The residential zones (RZs) right next to your train station itself get included in the train station radius, and that seems to determine the number of people that feed into your station?
    2. But what's the point of having lots of people waiting for a train if the only way to make trains come faster is to pay sim cash?
    3. If there is no benefit to where you rout your railroad tracks, why not just do a tiny loop around the station? Thats probably not in the spirit of what was intended.
    4. Maybe it'd make more sense for your system to be operable if you connect two different stations? If I'm a citizen, what's the benefit of a single train station.. only 1 stop. I can go in a ride and end up where I started. If the tracks run by my RZ but the station is far away, I'll still yell at mayor about wanting mass transit.
    5. As is, with 3 train stations I've added so far, I'd say like 1 to 2% of my RZs can access it. And I don't know what the benefit to me (the mayor) is other than running straight into a paywall per point 1 above

Discussion and insights welcome

  • It has been a few weeks since my last report.  I want to mention that I am an experienced player, this is my 5th city. I started playing a couple of months after SC was created. I've had a few clubs. The first club I created was a no-war club, 3 years later I learned about war. I was fortunate to learn from skilled war players. Played a lot of exciting games. SC has gone through many changes.

My interest in SC had gone down somewhat, that is until I saw the beta train testing. I started a new club directly after. I am highly interested in where EA goes with this new system.

Regional items on top of Capital items became too much. I do not like regions for that reason. Simply put, there are seriously way too many items in play.  I left that city behind and never looked back. With that being said, ... having trains travel from the capital to regions would be an AWESOME site!! (IF there were NO regional items, lol)

SC has a lot of items in play. With this new beta I feel EA should have given a certain amount of train $ to use in creating 'tracks... earning more train $ along the way to continue building it. Something reasonable of course. The infrastructure of Tracks & roads always needs work done. Train $ should be earned and used to deal with the train system. Capital items are available in the global HQ. Why would anyone want to waste their train $ (which takes time to earn) on regular capital items that you can get from global, club member, friend, or make?

Although yes I did spend real money on the train-  what EA does with this diamond in the rough will determine whether I spend any more going forward. Such fabulous opportunities for the Train System. *****I hope when it IS released ... many of us become happily surprised and eager to continue playing SC with a worthwhile Train System ;-)  SC is by far one of my favorite games.

Would like to thank the developers for finally giving me my life back, based on feed back this is awful and i have no interest in destroying my city to add this crap. Christmas came early this year!

  • You nailed it.  Way to ruin a potentially cool feature. I don't understand the point of trains. What does it add to your city?

It's so unintuitive-- Station (at least the first one) is too big. Tracks don't integrate with roads. Can't place a building along tracks, still need a road. My city is far too finished to make room or replace anything with trains. Too bad cuz trains around the city would be glorious.

I would place them in expansion territories but I am focusing on reaching 10M residents to unlock final expansion. Trains actively work against that goal, given the sheer space these things use, with no population boost.

    Seriously, what were they thinking?

    AWFUL IMPLEMENTATION EA AND TRACKTWENTY
