Rail Lines

Just wondering whether single rail lines will ever be converted to double rail lines just like at the railway stations. Doesn't look great with trains going through each other and/or stopping and waiting for other trains. Don't really understand why single rail lines exist in the first place as they are not one way only. Railway stations have double rail lines so why not just continue them on instead of merging into one ????
