Here is how to avoid it in the future. If you do play offline, make sure to open the app before you connect back to your wi-fi connection. If you do close the app completely (home button + flicking up) it will overwrite your game session once you connect.

In short: Open your app, establish connection, return to app and your progress will be synced to the server.
