Re: Things Every New(and Old) Mayor Should Know

Arcadia0426

I thought I might offer some insights on a couple of your other comments in your reply so here goes.

Starting with your difficulties in providing balanced Essential Services(Fire, Police, Health) if you are trying to use advanced buildings to provide these services you will likely continually experience these problems. This is due to the fact that many buildings have the same area of influence yet most maps only provide 1 sweet spot for placing building meaning that since EA does not let us stack buildings 3-dimensionally some buildings will always be less than ideally placed. You said you started using what you called a "loop within a loop" but stopped why? I assume by loop within a loop you meant something like my layout was it exactly like mine notice my "loops" aren't square this is intentional because with careful orientation I cover 12 residences with only 3 basic essential service buildings. By careful orientation, I mean since basic fire and police buildings have rectangular areas of influence it requires that those buildings be turned just right in order to perfectly cover my ring of residences without a single wasted square. My entire city is protected by nothing except basic essential service buildings with 2 exceptions for hospitals needed to cover my back row not seen in the image. I make no apologies for this since there is no benefit to using the larger more costly service buildings and if a design works don't change just for change sake do change if it offers a better solution.

You also mentioned you are not opposed to buying Sim Cash if so I would consider buying a Maxis Manor this provides all 3 services in one building but its biggest benefit is it will let you buy Vu Tokens which have been rare lately.

Lastly you said you think you have too many schools. The answer to that is if you have more than 1 High School you have too many. By the way what level are you? Have you unlocked the Epic Tower yet? If not let me provide a heads up on choosing your Specialty Buildings build mostly 3 Epic pt. buildings and 2 pt buildings when you must but try not to build to build anymore than the minimum required 1pt buildings. You will thank me when you complete your first Gold Epic Tower Upgrade a task that is impossible if you have a large number of 1pt. Buildings. My Education line at one time consisted of 13 Libraries and 1 High School along with the HQ all 1 Epic pt. buildings and my first Epic Project went very very badly achieving only copper level after many many hours of effort. Hey I never said I didn't learn some things the hard way, since then I build only 2 & 3 pt buildings and can complete most Gold level towers in 2-5 hours. I have replaced most of my libraries with Universities while maintaining 100% Education coverage. While you can bulldoze buildings bought with Gold Keys you will get no refund so you are better off saving more and building better options upfront than replacing poor buildings later. Another option for lower grade building is to move them into areas of new expansion while placing stronger buildings in more developed areas to provide more benefit. This will not eliminate the Epic Challenge penalty that theses 1pt. buildings suffer from but does offer an alternative to destruction albeit temporary.

    @esch5995

That's a lot of information; thanks for the response.

First, I'm at level 23. I defer leveling up to when it's inevitable in order to complete a contest assignment, so I have no experience with the epic building projects. I'm not familiar with the epic points associated with buildings. I have one HS, one library, one community college, and several elementary schools. How do I know what buildings will be best for future epic projects?

I'm glad for the info about the basic services. I was having a hard time seeing the value of spending more money, and using more space, to get little extra coverage. The Maxis Manor sounds good, but it takes more sim cash than I've been willing to buy. Of course, if I ever won the grand prize in the megalopolis league, well, that's a nice sim cash award! It's also rather unlikely.

As for the loop grid, it works well, I just don't want only that. Bear in mind I can't do landmarks yet, which will require some different grid patterns due just to their size (as you point out). In the end, part of the fun is to have a city you like to look at. I fear those glitzy towers that I see in other cities. Are they casino? Tokyo? I think they look cheesy, and they really dominate the cityscape.

Epic projects are best to stick to 3pt structures.  You can tell how many points their worth by long pressing on them.  See 1st pic.  This shows the Pier's Epic Points at 3.

Glitzy Towers: See 2nd pic.  If you mean these, they're Tokyo and yes they're an eyesore, but they're needed if you're going to complete the quest bubble for Tokyo Town.  You need 10 of them to build Himeji Castle.

Arcadia, I see SomeSimGuy has answered some of your questions but let me expand upon the Epic Projects.

I believe by now you should have the Epic Tower by now and be somewhat familiar with the Speed Up Tokens it provides. These tokens are essential if you hope to succeed in the Mayor's Contest and to replace the original allotment you most upgrade to Epic Towers which are the results of Epic Challanges. You begin an Epic Challenge my clicking the Mercury Helmet Bubble. You will then see the description of the Tower you can build based on Specialty Line(Education, Transportation, Entertainment, etc.) before you begin a Project make sure the particular line is one that you are well positioned to succeed in, in other words several 3pt. Buildings minimal 1pt. Buildings. If the Line is not one you like you can pay a small fee and change it to another random selection of your unlocked lines.

The reason we stress the 3pt. Buildings is that you will have 24hrs. to accumulate 160 Epic points to achieve Gold(Cheetah) Level, by far the most valuable tokens, although failing this you will still earn Silver(Llama) Level if you earn a minimum of 80pts or Copper(Turtle) Level for 20pts. Here is the kicker, each of your eligible buildings will have a task related to it, these tasks will be along the lines of supplying 4 Cheese or 3 Watermelons etc.. Some of these task can take quite awhile to complete and since the tasks do not very in difficulty based on building point values would you rather earn 3pts for your 4 Cheese or just 1. If you're only earning 1 point at a time you will quickly exhaust your resources and products forcing you to the Trade Market which will quickly drain your bank.

My advise to you would be to prepare for Epic Challenges ASAP by replacing as many 1 pt buildings as possible, increasing your storage to something north of 300, building Semolions and SimCash reserves, start stock piling long production products and raw materials. When you are ready to undertake your first Project clear your storage of nonessential items i.e. Beach & Mountain Tokens, Dozer Parts, quick to produce items like nails. Stockpile items in proportion to time needed to produce in other words the longer it takes to produce the more you want in inventory don't worry about keeping Steel or Wood or anything that can be easily produced.

DO NOT DELAY as you continue to level up it continues to get harder. Imagine needing multiple batches of 4 refrigerators which take over 3hrs to produce and need 2 Electronic Parts which require 7hrs to produce 5 and you can see how getting a few Gold Towers early can be immensely helpful later on

my last point is an Epic Challenge is an all-in commitment you can not possibly achieve this in the midst of a Mayor's Contest or any other side diversion for that matter my typical time for completion is around 6 hours but it may take much longer so plan a full day commitment.

Thanks for the info. I cannot do these projects until I reach level 24. I can't even see the point values for any building at this time; I'm guessing that kicks in at level 24 as well (I see area, boost, and price only).

Even now, however, I have a better sense of what these epic projects might be like. Sounds like a challenge!

On a side note, yes, I am familiar with the speed-up tokens. When I built the Dept. of Epic Projects (whatever that level was) I guess the game awarded some copper and silver tokens. I didn't notice at the time. I'm locked out of gold tokens and epic buildings until I level up. Right now I have a problem ticket in to EA. I won the grand prize this past contest, which included 5 gold tokens, and... I didn't get them! Hopefully, they'll fix that and give them to me.

As you move up they will give you speed up tokens at lv 16 (turtle), 20 (llama) and 24 (cheetah).  I would highly suggest you do not use these for anything else besides your first Epic Project.  Just save them and have them sit until you're ready to do you first epic.  I didn't know any better and used them frivolously and took me way too long to get Epic projects going.  When you're awarded the 4 cheetah tokens when you get to lv 24, don't use them until you're pretty confident that you can make it to 160.  It will make it a whole lot easier.

I had to do it the hard way.  I didn't even start epic projects until I hit Lv32 and was upside down on my storage with only a 190 capacity.  I could only make Turtle the first time, so I ended up with 2 turtle buildings until I got my storage high enough that I could make 80.  Then I ended up with 6 Llama buildings and couldn't make 160, so I kept increasing storage space.  When I got close to 300 storage (actual count was 290) I got lucky by completing one of the bubble quests that awarded me 4 cheetah speedup tokens.  Sorry, I don't remember which quest.  I saved those for my next epic project and after stocking up on a lot of items before starting it, I made my first cheetah and used 3 of the 4 cheetah tokens during that time with 4 hours left on the clock.

It's only gotten easier since by continuing to increase  storage capacity and saving Epic tokens for when they're really needed.  My own opinion is that a storage capacity of 300 is the magic number needed to make cheetah.  It can be done with less, but the more space you have the easier it becomes since you have more room to stock up.

When I stock up, I clear out my storage, land, beach and mountain items to have more space to store items.

  • Have anymore advise, there are so many question from different level of players and it is difficult to obtain Knowledgable answers to a broad spectrum of gamers....would love for some of those problems to be addressed....

It  would benefit greatly if EA help would put together an updated new mayor help , the information that is on file is severely outdated!

Is there here any thing specific you would like answered because there is a lot to figure out and documentation from EA is limited, hard to find, out of date, and sometimes flat wrong.

I had planned on addressing other areas in detail, but truthfully I expected a little more response to this post than I've gotten. It is hard to get into details and keep it short and concise and I'm not sure people want to see long posts on these forums. I've been toying with the idea of writing something on Specialty Buildings since it is such huge part of a successful city and they can make or break your quest for Epic Buildings and I just can't believe what I see sometimes as I explore others cities while trading, people do not seem to have a clue to maximize their potential. Then I need to remind myself there is no right or wrong way to build your city as long as you are getting the results you want.

Always glad to help just ask.

In regards to this part of the discussion, you are correct. I have mainly played online PC games, like Elder Scrolls etc, with guilds and such. They actually go to the extent of website development, which I know very little about except that it's easier because certain places offer a free domain and templates for designing. I do not Facebook. In fact, I can't even friend anyone in anyway that I know of because Apples last update did away with that option and I can only view my achievements, this is probably because Apple gets a cut if they do away with friending capabilities through their Game Center and essentially try to force people to use Facebook. If anyone knows a way other than Facebook for IOS devices please make a post, lol. Anyway, if someone really enjoyed the game enough and had accurate access or knowledge regarding the game they could undertake the task and circumvent both EA and Facebook. Maintenance would be required as game changes occurred. I, however, am not volunteering for that responsibility, lol. It kind of would be nice to have ingame guilds with a guild bank, lol. That's asking a lot though. I got spoiled by the luxuries  provided by PC game developers  and I already advocate for some kind of in game communication and friending methods. it would reduce the need for Facebook, which is a source of revenue because then anything you post is Facebooks property basically and they will exercise that to the fullest potential for monetary gain. This information comes to me via computer security specialist who work in the financial arena where security is top priority. None of them will join Facebook. You can create emails just for gaming but they usually can circumvent that and acquire not only your other personal information but any contacts on your device via updates. I highly advocate against its use whatsoever vocally every chance I get...as you can very well see, lol. Happy gaming everyone!

I think having a tutorial section regarding different topics with very precise headings would be nice. I haven't seen much new info on the web since the last update and a lot is really outdated. I type in the search box provided above and what pops up is so broad. I write long posts, lol. Can you tell...hee hee. It does take work to compile and organize information and players input from those with accurate knowledge but it really needs more subdivisions IMO. General is so vast and broad. It would be nice to have lists, like residential  buildings only related, and then subdivide that into epics, specialized towns, omega. A section for the speciality buildings. With info like what they do, maximizing their potential etc. There are just so many topics it's crazy, lol. These forums represent that because people are looking for such specific information that finding it at times can be a challenge. I won't complain though because I am grateful to have it versus nothing and I think folks really do try to help best they can. I think I did find a way to add friends via iMessage on iPad and it's a hassle but I tried it and the person got the message but they don't actually play so seeing if the invite actually would be accepted wasn't useful. I see a lot of email addresses when I check my contacts and I don't know whose they are but many resemble city names in game. I sent one invite out to a name that looked familiar and they didn't respond back at all, lol. Maybe they were freaked out by getting a message from someone they know nothing about or just didn't get it or deleted it as spam...who knows. My email address does not resemble my game name at all. It's weird how that info shows up though. I think it recognizes anyone in game at the time and just lists them. I think that's kind of a weird way to try to make friends. It's personal information with an email contact that some may not want shared. I don't want some weirdo emailing me..lol. I think most peeps are ok but you just never know. I however have not gotten a message at all and I guess you'd need to list your email here to let other gamers know..hey, I play and would like some friends, here's my email, it will be in your contacts list when I am in game. Jeez..what a hassle. I had to read the tutorial on it several times to actually understand how to get it going but I am not the most savvy techno person out there and I am a little concerned about just throwing my info out there but my address should be showing up in others contacts list if they have know how to use it. Lol. The flip side is if you get hooked up with some cool peeps then you can work together to advance much more quickly and a means of communications to accomplish goals.  I'll try it a few more times to see if it works but I can only friend folks with iOS. It won't cross over to android I don't think. Facebook just isn't something I support though playing solo isn't so bad anyway. Just a heads up.
