Why does it take 24 hours for friends to show in simcity?

I added a friend yesterday so I could get an item that he had and I rebooted my device its an iPad 2, still did not show up on my list. Today showed for the first time but the getting of the item had...

My friends have always showed up right away.  Make sure that you're logged into facebook and Game Center.  You can find Game Center in your device settings but the game should log you in automatically when you click the button.  Same with facebook.  You can find that in the Sim City game settings in the top left corner of the game.  If you're logged into both of these,  your friends should appear right away.
