Why Is City Expansion So Hard?

Expanding a city in SimCity can be very challenging because the required expansion items are extremely hard to collect. Many players feel stuck since land, storage, and beach expansions depend heavily on random drops. Even when playing actively, the items don’t appear often enough to support steady city growth. This slow progression can make the game feel more stressful than enjoyable. Because of this, some players start to wonder if the system is intentionally designed to push them toward spending money.

It would be interesting to hear how other players manage this issue. Do you rely on the Global Trade HQ, or do you simply wait for items to drop over time? Some players say they store certain items to improve their chances, while others think the drop rates are just too low. The challenge becomes even bigger when multiple expansions require the same rare items. What strategies or suggestions do you think could make city expansion in SimCity more balanced and enjoyable?

My city space has been so cramped for the past many months. I barely get to make adjustments. Though I try to complete CoM, it's still not enough. Could you please sell me those spare you have? Thank You

Joining a club definitely helps. I have 3 cities all upgraded so I don’t use land anymore. I was giving them to club members but they are upgraded now too so I sell. It’s the best way to find upgrades. I used to give them to club members for free since I have over 60 million simoleons. Clubs are the best way to expand. I even held supplies occasionally since I have the storage space. It’s much harder when you are first starting. Long term players can really help

When I opened up sunny isles I had 49 free land expansions cards. I used at least 20 or so to open all 4 islands and I still collected more after I did.

When you say "land expansions" are you talking about the deeds that give one free expansion per deed. How do you know you have 30 of them? I have unused deeds, but I'm not aware of a way to find how many.

You need to build mass transit (trains) and Omega buildings. Both the train store and the Neo store often have expansion items for sale.

Many players in my team are fully upgraded in storage and land. We help other members by buying them when we see them in global or CoM and events when they are offered and then sell them to our team. It is not necessary to buy the premium pass. I have been playing for many years and never paid any real money.

Try to join a club that will help you expand.

  • Ok good points you have raised, you have to be lucky to find any land expansions in global.

I buy the premium pass every month and being that I have been playing 10+ years I have about 30+ free land expansions but can’t sell them.

I also collect land expansions from doing the design city and I sell them on to my club members.

I also have my city and regions fully upgraded.

    Good luck.
