  • @Zombie_Devil_Bat I have done some light testing and have been successful in changing the user folder location, but I recommend that you make a backup of your existing SimCity 4 folder just to make sure it is safe. So far, I have only found this process to be possible with a disk version and version 1.1.641.0 if installed using EA App. It might work with other versions of the game too, such as GOG or Steam, but I do not own them and cannot test it.

If you have installed the game using EA App and wish to check your game version, please go to [Installation folder]\SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition\Apps\, hover over SimCity 4.exe with your mouse, and it will show some details, including the game version. You can also open the config-log.txt file and check the version number there, provided that you have launched the game at least once.

To change the user folder location for SimCity 4, please do the following:

    • Go to the location where you want to have the new user folder and create a folder called SimCity 4. For my own test, I used Documents\EA Games\ and made a SimCity 4 folder in there, but you can, of course, use another location. Once you create the new folder, open it, and copy its location from the address bar.
    • Locate your SimCity 4 desktop shortcut or create one, right-click on it, and open Properties. At the end of the Target line, add a space and type in the following:
      -UserDir:"[Location of the new folder]\"
    • Replace [Location of the new folder] with the actual location, and make sure the backslash is there, at the end. For reference, this is what mine looked like (including the quotation marks):
      "[Installation folder]\SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -UserDir:"C:\Users\[My Username]\Documents\EA Games\SimCity 4\"
    • Save the changes, and launch the game.

If you have any progress from the default user folder that you wish to move to the new folder, please open Documents\SimCity 4\ and copy the contents into the new SimCity 4 folder.
