How to get SimCity on second or third monitor?

I have no problems with the game so far, except for that I am forced to play it on my main (first) monitor.

My setup is as followed, from left to right:

Monitor 3: 2560x1440

Monitor 1: 1200x1920 (portrait mode)

Monitor 2: 1920x1080

If I start the game it opens on monitor 1. The resolution options are all portrait resolutions, there are no landscape options for me.

Moving the game to my second or third monitor will just move the screen, it wont change the aspact ratio to landscape. Also checking the graphics menu on second or third monitor will still only show portrait resolutions.

Closing the game on second or third monitor also doesnt help, it will open up on first monitor again.

I also briefly checked the config files, but couldnt find anything there.

How can I play the game on second or third monitor?

  • Well, I know of a way that will put the game in basically a Borderless Window mode.

Set the game itself to windowed mode.

Download the free program ShiftWindow. (I use this to cast the game) http://grismar.net/shiftwindow/

On ShiftWindow, when you start SimCity, go to "Grab Window," choose SimCity. Then choose the monitor. Then click "TRIGGER |> " remember, SimCity must be running for it to see the game. And it must be in Windowed Mode as well.

Now it'll be on the monitor you want it to be on. And ShiftWindow takes almost no resources.

    Hope this helps!

  • I know this isn't the optimal solution, but you could temporarily set your other, larger monitor as your primary in the windows display settings, at which point hopefully simcity would launch there, and use it to discern resolution options.

    Hopefully!

OK I'm using a MacBook Pro just a couple months old and an LG second monitor (Simcity 4).  In system preferences, arraingement tab do as it suggests in the second tip: drag the menu bar to the second monitor (in the little box the dialog offers).  Presto, the external/second monitor become 'prime'.  The dock follows along so close out from the system preferences and launch the game.  Didn't need to reset any display settings from within the game.  Return to system preferences/display and arraingement tab, drag the menu bar back to restore the system to normal.
