Omega and recycling

I know the drones produce a lot of garbage in a omega city, but do they also creat a bunch of recycling?

Im wondering if I can transition from importing processors to building my own processors and using the recycling plant to make the alloy and plastics required.

Has anybody else tried this?

Hey sorry I meant respond earlier but I totally forgot I’d let you know how it went haha. So I tried it out, with the population over 80k and sims 3-4 hats educated, I was able to smoothly have the recycling center produce alloy and plastics, supply the processors plant, and have left over alloy and plastics to sell at the trade depot. The processor plant produced enough processors to supply the one omega plant with all four extension making drones, and still have plenty left over to sell processors at the trade depot.

I was very pleased with this and only started running in to “good” problems when my population started reaching upwards to 175k-200k, then my recycling plants were weren’t making alloy and plastics fast enough and there were too many recycling bins not being picked up. I tried plopping another recycling plant which helped but then I started having storage problems. So I took away the trade depot and added a trade port which then took everything away too fast and I couldn’t keep supplying my processor factory 🤦🏻‍♂️. That’s where I’m at so far haha.

So I’m just going to keep tinkering with it but you can, with the right population and education, use only recycling plant to run an efficient alloy, plastics, and processor town.

  • Hi @GENERALSNUGGLES - Recycling centers can reduce cost for the raw resources, for sure. The thing is that you need educated sims and a fairly robust population (maybe around 75,000 or so) to get the recycling to work. On top of that, you need to watch for traffic issues (always!) & the storage in the recycling center. I would suggest having a trade depot or port for each resource so your recycling center delivers to the trade depot / port, and the factory gets its raw resources from the trade depot.

It can be a lot of management, if your recyclables produce more resources than your factory is using, you'll want to turn the depots to export for a while. Also keep in mind that once you start recycling, you're kind of stuck with it. If you bulldoze a recycling plant, the sims will still be producing them and then you have a major issue. The plant can stop producing anything if storage becomes full, usually due to traffic issues. So, the short answer is "yes, you can do it". The more accurate answer is - "if your city has at least 75,000 population, 5 stars education, no traffic problems, and room for one or two recycling plants & three or more trade ports plus the processing plant, you can - but is it worth it?" It's cool to do, and seems to make sense at first glance, but if your main goal is income you may be better off just importing the processors. It takes a bunch of space, time & management to make it work successfully.

This Skye Storme video has a fantastic overview of preparing for Omega, including some tips about importing vs. resources. (If you're interested, the full build for that city starts here

Awesome thanks man. Yeah I watched his all his videos, they were super helpful. I may still play around with the recycling, I want to see how much of it I can make self sufficient with out importing or plopping a bunch of mines and HQ buildings and going that route. Mainly just messing around see what works and doesn’t. If it doesn’t work oh well.  I was curious if anybody has done it. “It” being using a recycling plant to feed a processors plant enough plastics and alloy to remain self sufficient, I wasn’t for sure if already having drones in your city if that would increase the amount of recycling like it does with garbage.

I've played around with recycling before, as long as your education level stays up it should produce enough. I don't think I've ever specifically done it with Omega, so I'm not sure if the drones will increase it or not. If you do it, come back and let me know. Happy building!

Hey - thanks so much for sharing what happened. Sounds great, I'm happy to have the information. I might even try it out myself now 👍

Good luck on your tinkering, and Happy Building!
