Recycling trash cans double before my eyes

Hello,

I have Sim CIty: Complete edition.

I learned all about trash collections from videos and this post

Garbage-Trucks-Not-Collecting-Recycling-Works

Now my sims are protesting about garbage.

My trash overlay shows all garbage and recycling being picked up.

My Recycling center is in both my city( 16 Trucks/ 4 delivery trucks) and and neighboring city lends 28 trucks.

My Garbage trash center is in the neighboring city 10 trucks.

My trash level is 415 of 1318 and recycle is 6309 of 108,134

I  Scraped that city because no matter what i do I could not clear 108 trash cans.

So I started a whole new game

What I noticed is when i got my city to 70k residents, and added a mega tower with two floors this may not be the reason it just is what i had on

the map.

so I was watching the trash overlay seeing every can picked up 4k of them,

I watched at 3am-6m when the new trash is put out,

and low and behold it doubled and I had no changes to my city,

so now I have 8k recycling showing that needs to be picked up

So I watched the overlay that same day and every green bar was collected by 16 trucks

It only said 4k picked up of 8k but the overlay had no trash because it was all picked up

So why did it double up on me

  • First, Sims need to be educated to recycle. So if your education level has dropped, your recycling may slow or stop.

Make sure your recycling center has metal or alloy additions, and that they are working. You have to have a trade depot or trade port to get rid of the recycled goods. Try to plop them close to your entrance so you can get a good fast traffic flow. Make sure you have a storage facility for each type of recyclable you're making at the recycling center.

The flow should go like this: Double-click the recycling center to edit the facility; add metal processing units and max out the delivery trucks. Exit and plop a trade depot next to the recycling center. Edit the depot, bulldoze the freight warehouse that came with it and add a metal warehouse. Exit the edit and click on the manage button and set metals to export.

Now, the recyclables should get picked up, dropped off at the recycling center where it processes them and turns them into metals. The recycling center then transports (via the delivery trucks) the metal to the trade depot. Regional trucks will come into your city and pick up the metal, paying you for it.

Garbage dumps, recycling centers, trade depots and trade ports sometimes but not always get to a point where the trucks stop going out to collect (or deliver goods from trade depots and ports). It's been a bug that's been present since the launch of the game. If and when this happens, demolish the trucks and add new ones and be prepared to have to do it again.

Community colleges and universities with regional traffic will cause you to lose city students over time, causing your education level to drop. It will count these missing students as "uneducated". This is another bug that's been present forever. This can be a big annoyance to fix; I would recommend you watch Skye Storme's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThgobF98QHI on how to fix this.

    Hello,

First off thank you for the long well written post.

Ok here is where I stand

    1 recycling center

    0/80 material storage
    375/2000 crates of plastic
    8.8/20 tons of metal
    6.5/20 tons of alloy
    8 delivery trucks

Two blocks over are the trade depots I have 2 of them

    First one:
    10/20 tons of alloy
    2000/2000 crates of plastic
    0/10.8 crates of freight
    4 delivery trucks

    Second one:
    0/2000 processors
    0/20 tons of metal
    0/10.8 crates of freight

    Processor factory:
    15/20 tons of alloy
    1525/2000 creates of plastic
    950/4000 Crates of processors
Close to recycling center and trade depot

Schools( aware there is a problem cannot figure out bus stops all over city map shows green coverage)

    2 public library

    1 Grade School:
289 students attended yesterday of 950 Capacity
    10 Buses

    Community College:
1320 students attended yesterday of 1000 Capacity
Added extension wing just now, because oddly students exceed capacity

    University
I thought I had on but do not

So as you can see I am doing all that you mention

Thanks for the additional information. Not sure that I can help directly with the count showing double the amount of trash and recyclables as exist ; it may be a bug, or it may be related to the regional sharing of trucks and centers. I have never had this issue, but I've found posts about it back somewhere before patch 2. it's possible if it's a bug it still exists, or maybe existed in an older city that you reclaimed.

You can't collect from abandoned buildings, so there may be some extra from that issue once in while. I've read that when you demolish your buildings, the bin count doesn't always decrease, but when you add new buildings it always goes up. This means as you rebuild your city you're adding to the can count instead of replacing existing cans as it should. Maybe you gained these "phantom" trash cans when you made space to plop your megatower.  If this is the problem, then it may resolve itself after a few in-game months.

There's a multitude of issues with regional sharing of recycling and trash services. The count in your city might be including the shared city's counts, and the trucks may not be returning to their garages, or the other city has issues that is preventing you from clearing the numbers correctly.

    Recycling Centers:

    1. Stop sharing all trash and recycling trucks between the two cities. Just for good measure, after stopping the sharing, demolish all the trucks in the recycling center and rebuild them.

    2. Demolish those freight warehouses in your trade depots. They just take up space and steal freight from your commercial buildings. (The only reason you might need them would be if your industry complains that they have nowhere to ship freight.)

    Education:

    1. You don't need more than one level of education. Get rid of the libraries, grade schools & all the bus stops. Pick either community college or university.

    2. Community colleges and universities have classes more than one time a day, so you can have a larger attendance than capacity.

    3. Remember that residential education comes from students; industrial education (tech level) travels over roads. You'll want your processor factories to be within range of a facility to maintain the tech level to run.,

    4. Something that works for me is to use community colleges, and plop more than one rather than adding extensions when needed. The footprint is smaller and you can get them close enough to residential areas so that the students will walk to school rather than drive.

    5. You will lose students to the region eventually. Highly encourage you to watch the video I previously posted.

I hope some of this helps.

I wanted to let you know I just experienced this problem for the first time. I've had phantom prisoners in my city for a long time, but never phantom trash. (I got the phantom prisoners because I closed a police station and demolished it with a bunch of prisoners inside, and the game never deleted them. So it says I have 22 prisoners and something like 45 at large, but the overlay shows 2 in the stations and 1 at large).

Anyway, I didn't find a way to solve the problem, but I did figure out why it happened. I usually demolish and rebuild areas during the (Sim) evening or overnight, but this time I was re-configuring a large area and didn't pay attention to the time of day. In this case, I was demolishing about a third of my city and rebuilding it. I paused the game somewhere near the beginning of the garbage collection cycle and demolished a large chunk of residential. After putting in my new roads and zoning new residential, I let it run and build up. The next day it showed double the amount of trash that I actually had.

Since I play offline, I always save under a different name before I make a big change, so I was able to try it again. When I waited until all the garbage was picked up and the dump was waiting for the next collection cycle, I was able to demolish the whole area without causing an issue with the trash numbers. I did have the same thing happen when my trash dump closed through a whole cycle due to "not enough workers". So, I doubt that it will ever resolve once it's happened, but you can prevent it from happening in the future by letting the garbage trucks pick up all the trash before making any large changes the city.

The only positive is that other than annoying messages and Sims protesting at city hall, it doesn't affect the gameplay. It definitely affects my ocd tendencies, though. Makes me crazy when the numbers don't match.
