Sim City Mac graphics issues on a very well equipped Mac Pro...

I'm having poor graphics performance issues, stuttering, and lag when playing sim city on OSX. When playing in boot camp on Windows 7 I don't have any problems at all, it's even smooth when all settings are maxed out. When playing in OSX with settings maxed out, it's pretty much unplayable. I know for a fact it is not my computer... I'm running a Mac Pro with OSX 10.8.4, 8 core Intel Xeon processors, 32GB of ram, 4 solid state hard drives, and an ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB Ram.

What are you system specs?  Go to "About this Mac" and list the GPU (graphics card) that is the most important thing I'm concerned about.  Other good info is the Processor (CPU), RAM, OSX version, and Resolution if possible.

Have you tried setting everything to Min/Low with a low resolution and still no good?

i dont know how to lower the resolution.

Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

You and your tinker toy video don't get to do that until after you meet the OSX version requirement, 10.8.4

  • I have the following specs:

    iMac 2011

    2.5Ghz Intel Core i5

    8GB ram

    AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512MB

    OSX 10.8.4

Screen resolution is set to 1920 x 1080, 60hz (which fits my 21.5 inch monitor and matches my everyday current desktop display resolution).

Framerate cap is set to 30.

    Anti-aliasing set to 'ON'

    V-Sync set to 'ON'.

    Filter 'OFF'

Initially I start on 'High' for everything. Lighting, Textures., Shadows, Geometry, Animation Details. But as my city grows in size I have to constantly reduce the graphic settings from High all the way down to Low. It's a shame really as I bought this game for the graphics as well as the game play. I'm already at setting 'Low' on everything and just about filled the entire map.

So reducing it down to something that looks like it was developed in the early 90's is not really what I was expecting.

Are my system specs to low?

EA quote the following specs at: https://help.ea.com/uk/article/simcity-system-requirements

"... Lion OSX 10.7.5 with a Core 2 Duo processor
    2 GB of RAM
12 GB of Hard Drive space
Either an Intel HD 3000, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M, or ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card...."

I do feel sorry for anyone that has lower specs than mine and expects to enjoy this game as it should be.

  • I've got a 2013 Mac Pro with 2x ATI FirePro D300 graphics cards, each with 2 GB RAM. The game is so slow even on medium graphics settings. How can this be? Do I need to upgrade to the next level of Mac Pro to get enough graphics horsepower to actually play the game?

    Your drivers may be outdated.

To check if any updates are available please do the following:

Click on the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen
    Select "Software Update..."
Any updates available will be listed and able to be downloaded or you will be told your software is up to date

If you play with a Windows virtual machine, follow standard Windows drivers update procedure. 🙂
