Progress from closed alpha gone?

I played a little bit in the closed alpha and really enjoyed it but wanted to play with my friends so now the early access is out i went to play but when I launched it through steam although my account is linked it has made me make a whole new character and I've lost everything I've done? is this normal? do I not get anything I earned before?
