Pumping & Jello Physics

Hi.  Bowl skater here.  Curious if I suck or if this is how the game is just meant to be.

Can’t attach the video clip here, but in the first and last pics, you see angles where the pumping speed boost seems to never register.  If you use your gravity IRL you can get a lot of speed off of these less obvious angles, but in game, it seems to only detect very specific ones for me - while moving directly away from the top of the ramp, or perfectly orthogonal in a bowl’s corner.  It feels dependent on the ramp’s direction rather than the skater’s movement and what’s underneath him.

Seriously I might just suck at this I don’t know, but I have to share one more uninformed opinion regardless.

Once you’re pumping like a lunatic back to back to back, you seem to hit a modest speed limit that you could’ve just pushed to get to.

Momentum feels elastic to the “push once up a 90 degree angle and get launched 6ft into the air” mechanic that dominates the more difficult and would-be rewarding techniques.  It’s a great game underneath, but it’s dominated by cocomelon slop burning my attention span.

Please make the game difficult so we have to figure out how to do impressive things.  Low-stat Tony Hawk vert physics on the N64 are more realistic and natural than this beginner-only nonsense lol

  • Fellow Sk8r Boi,

I kind of agree with your position on the oddness of the Pumping mechanics. They feel a bit weird. I feel like you could be 10% up a ramp barely barely rolling, PUMP, and be 10ft above the 6ft ramp somehow?

I play a more realistic set of controls and I found I don't like when pumping sends me TOO FAR forwards up a ramp because it's just unrealistic. I set my Pump assist to 0 and then Max Pump is 50% only because 100% feels like I paid Isaac Newton off personally.

The 1 thing I would like to see is a choice for the Pump:

+ Pump 1: Reach the coping

+ Pump 2: Ascend above the coping and get air.

    + Pump 3: Space

or something like that, it's nice to be able to choose whats happenin like with wallies. You can pre-wind a wallie, slow-pop a wallie, wallie off and away from an obstacle, wallie up onto, or up and over...

Pumping feels like when Beetles fly. Just flip the switch and hold on tight cause idk wtfs happening.

Transition mechanics are still being updated, pump and speed have already been improved heavily since the playtest. More improvement is on the way based on player feedback and testing. Just have to be patient there.

Calling N64 THPS vert physics more realistic is pretty wild. You may just need to play more and get a feel for this experience, personally I also changed the pump setting from push forward to using the triggers like in Skate 3. Perhaps that could help?
