If an Android/iOS version is in the works, I see no real problem porting it to the NS2 with relative ease.
Android and iOS both run on modern ARM cores, just like the NS2. And when it comes to graphics, the GPU cores in the NS2 are based on Nvidia’s Ampere architecture — not that far from the 20xx/30xx cards. Power isn’t really an issue either, as proven by other big PC game ports already running fine on the system. Memory and bandwidth are also somewhat comparable to what we had on PS4 or Xbox One.
And the "always-online" argument doesn’t hold up anymore. The NS2 already has fully online games, and some others with optional offline modes (that aren’t perfect, sure — you know which one — but still, they exist and are playable).
And yeah, don’t tell me there’s no Frostbite game in development for NS2. Everything’s already in place. It’s just that EA probably doesn’t want to deal with Nintendo’s ecosystem and all the extra costs that come with it.
From a purely technical standpoint, there’s no reason why this can’t be done without major R&D investment. They’re already spending more than that optimizing for Android and iOS, and even supporting last-gen consoles — which often have more raw power, sure, but less modern GPU features.
In this day and age, we just can’t have nice things… that’s what I keep telling myself.
But please, EA — if a NS2 version were ever to come, make sure it runs at a solid 60 FPS. Anything less for this type of game will not go well with players.
