Please explain the extra people that appear when respawning in arcade

When you die in an arcade match (at least in the splitscreen coop mode) you see additional people showing up in the slots (not sure if this is the correct terminology) as you prepare to respawn  Do I...

That's your squad, though they don't really matter in arcade, and the squad system is a useless garbage in multiplayer, so... No real point. Anyway, they are just bots (or other players in MP) who died and are respawning at the same time as you are, and the game puts you together as a team.
