Hello @iWatchtower and thanks for reporting in!

I've noticed this change as well and am glad they are trying to improve the spawning system in HvV, because I always thought that it was very annoying. That you cannot see the characters of your teammates is actually a known issue. The developers have already confirmed to track this bug down and solve it!

This is straight from the last update patch notes:

KNOWN ISSUES

• An issue has occurred where the selected heroes are not always highlighted on the deploy screen when playing Heroes Vs. Villains or Hero Showdown. The issue is being investigated and expected to be fixed at a later update.

So probably in the next update we are able to see which characters are free before deselecting our own character!
