I agree that the current system can be improved. My frustration level is high when spamming a certain hero and then see it slipping away at 2 seconds...
The system that would make more sense to me and I just came up with:
INFANTRY CLASSES
1a) Select the class from the spawn screen once and you are able to edit the cards for that class. Once you have changed star cards or other things, you can click on "spawn" button (which is available at all times, not dependent on a timer) and be directed to the spawn follow screen.
1b) Double click on a class from the spawn screen to directly go into the squad follow screen.
2) Follow a player and spawn on top or spawn with the default spawn when the timer reaches zero.
HEROES1a) Select a hero from the spawn screen when available and click once to select to change star cards etc. With the hero selected, it doesn't "reserve" it. In order to choose this character to spawn with you have to press "spawn", which is available at all times (not dependent on a timer). It will then reserve the hero for the player and others cannot choose it any more.
1b) Select a hero from the spawn screen when available and double click to instantly reserve the hero.
2) Show a checkmark for the selected hero and wait until the spawn timer reaches 0 for you to force spawn as the hero at the default spawn.
3) After a hero is reserved, it will spawn when the timer runs out (or is already at 0 when selected). Players cannot reserve a hero and wait forever without spawning.
There should be an option to cancel the reservation when the timer runs by a CANCEL button. However, a player should not be allowed to again reserve that hero and repeat the process.
REINFORCEMENT CLASSES
1a) Select a reinforcement from the spawn screen by clicking once and be able to change the cards for the reinforcement. With the reinforcement selected, it doesn't "reserve" it directly for you. In order to do that once you have changed star cards etc is with the button "spawn", which would be available at all times (not dependent on a timer).
1b) Select a reinforcement by clicking twice on the reinforcement to have that reinforcement "reserved" for you and be instantly directed to the squad follow screen.
2) If someone else clicked faster on a certain reinforcement than this class is unavailable for me to choose. I don't have to wait and spam click the class.
3) Follow a player and spawn on top or spawn with the default spawn when the timer runs out. Give 10 extra seconds time after the spawn timer has run out before force spawning the player on the default spawn. This will make sure that players cannot reserve a reinforcement and does not spawn.
There should be a CANCEL button.
VEHICLES
1a) Select a vehicle from the spawn screen and click it once to change it star cards. With the vehicle selected, it doesn't "reserve" it directly for you. In order to do that once you have changed star cards etc is with the button "spawn", which would be available at all times (not dependent on a timer).
1b) Select a vehicle with double clicking to directly "reserve" it for that player.
2) When the spawn timer reaches zero, spawn the player in the reserved vehicle. Players cannot reserve a vehicle and do not spawn as one.
In addition to all of these systems, make the spawn timer continue somewhere without ever removing it from the screen. Once a "reservation" is made, the spawn timer continuous in the bottom left corner of the screen where the "Spawn button" is. For the normal classes and reinforcements., the spawn timer should just continue and be visible on the squad follow screen as well.
So instead of us spam clicking all the characters in the menu, have a system that makes the first one to click the one that can spawn with that class. It probably sounds a bit abstract, but it makes actually a lot more sense than the current system, IMO.
