Does bring back the audio but then the audio starts cracking....
Sound did return at times but I still get static as well.

I have this problem as well.
People have reported that this helps the problem:
Go to Control Panel > Sound.
Select your device and choose Properties. Check the enhancements tab and disable any enhancements that are active.
Then go to the Advanced tab and set the quality to "16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)"
Hit Apply then launch the game and please check again.Besides that the problem is being sent up the chain. Hopefully there's a more graceful and permanent fix soon.

I've got the same problem and no this fix doesnt work considering I just completed a fresh install of windows and those settings are the default for my headset right off the bat. Now dont you feel silly for trying to say this is gonna fix it when everyone has tried it before you posted this.
Get real and fix the game already. I cant believe this hasnt been fixed yet considering how high profile this game is.
