PC steam version:
Using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, button 12 no matter how I remap the key in addition to its key function acts like the Escape key to go to the menu.

Exactly, very annoying. For some reason, one of the joystick buttons needs to be the menu button. Who thought this was a good idea to begin with ??

Same issue with same Joystick.
The problem seems to be with the device "focus". You use one device setup and the game goes to that (say Keyboard/Mouse) and then go to use another device and the game switches to that (Joystick).
So I figure they forced the Joystick button (I believe its button 11 on mine) to be the menu so you have access to that while using your Joystick.
I would much rather have the ability to use my Joystick for all the flight controls and the Keyboard at the same time for extra binds. My Joystick only has 12 buttons but you have built the game with more than 12 assignable functions.
Game looks to be fun though so far.

I have read how other people just plug in the exact same joystick and it works immediately, but no matter what I do, I can't get my joystick to register. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is, but I have tried to change the controller setting in Steam to no avail. In the overall controller settings on steam the joystick is recognized, but within the specific controller settings for the game it isn't recognized, and within the game itself the joystick doesn't register.
- 5 years ago@The_Phief I doubt you need to make any changes in Steam as the game itself launches from Origin. So in game, you don't have the option to change controls on the flight stick ? have you tried a different USB port ?

To add my context, I have the Logitech Force 3D Pro which is a close brother to the Extreme and I am using the Origin version of the game and I do not have this issue.

@izzardlizardYeah, I have a different flightstick, but this seem to affect everyone I guess : The game forces you to have a button bind to the Menu. You can remap it to another button if you want (in the Menu key binding menu, not Flight) but it won't let you unbind it completely, which is stupid when you already need something like 15 buttons to play the game properly and your stick only has 6.
I'm pretty sure the reason is because they treated PC and console versions the same way. So if you have a stick pugged in, it's considered like your unique way of controlling and ignores the fact that you might also have a mouse and keyboard, so everything must be tied to that single peripheral. It's fine if you have a throttle with 20 extra buttons, but with a single stick, it's nearly impossible. The funny thing is that it won't let you get rid of that menu button, but it does not care if you don't assign buttons to much more important stuff like throttles of or missiles. Go figure.
