Add them via Origin's launcher friend list. or via Steam friends lists.
If you add them via Steam, you'll have to restart Squadrons befor they will show up in-game to invite to games (no idea why, just is XD )
But you should not have to do this. I agree 100% the social feature in this game is broken.
