There's two cases where you cannot use your lightsaber. One is when you're walking near friendlies in non combat areas, and the other is after encountering Jaro Tapal when first trying to access the tomb at Dathomir. That is because during that encounter with Master Tapal, your lightsaber gets broken. It's the main reason you need to go to IIlum.
As for the saber or benches not working after it's repaired, I've never had that happen in 3 play throughs, nor have I seen or heard of anyone else have it happen. I suggest maybe running a game file integrity check.
It is possible your save got corrupted though, and as far as I know, since there's no backup saves, there's no way other than starting a new play through to get around that.
Thanks for the reply. Were your three play-throughs on the PS4? I have a PS4 in my bedroom as well and the game does the same thing on that system. You mean to tell me I just so happen to have the only 2 PS4s that have the same bug? Of course not, it's all tied into the save file, ok I got it. But I gotta tell ya, I never heard of a save file being corrupted such that every other button and movement of Cal works just fine. That is just plain crazy! And the workbench thing seems to work when it feels like it. Even the workbench on the Mantis only works maybe one out five times that I load the save file. I put so much time and effort into this game and I'm really pissed - I'm 64 and don't have the reflexes and eye/hand coordination I use to, (you know the wall-runs and rope-swinging BS was just lovely) but I'm retired and love games. Yup, I started back in the 80s with the original Pacman. As far as starting over, as much as I really do love this game, Respawn can kiss my...(BTW, I called EA 4 times, still no reply...because they have no answer - nice!)

No I play on PC only actually. I've never felt comfortable with gamepads, but I didn't start gaming until 2001 or so and started with a keyboard and mouse.
I happen to be 61 myself btw, nearly 62 now, so I know what you mean about lost reflexes, eyesight, and dexterity, especially when I try playing on a gamepad.
It was a bit awkward double tapping to evade, but I managed somehow to beat it even on Grand Master. I gotta say though, it helps immensely to build up all the stims, skills, and life and force essences.

Sorry for the delay. I should have replied sooner. But, you were absolutely right - after escaping Dathomir, you head to IIum, yes, with a broken lightsaber. I must be brain-dead, but I somehow didn't realize I had to go to the Jedi Temple to fix it. I finally watched a walkthrough of that part of the game and realized my mistake. So now I feel like an idiot for reporting a false bug. Oh well...I'm back to loving the game again! BTW, you are a really good gamer and I'm impressed. Beating this game on Grand Master is no joke...I couldn't do it without getting really frustrated.
With my current abilities, Jedi Knight if just fine. Keep Gaming my friend!!!

Like I said, it helps a TON to get all the stims, skills, and life and force essences you can. When you lack the reflexes and dexterity of a teenager, that is essential on higher difficulty modes.
That said, the final boss fight still took me several tries on Grand Master. My resolve was to be more aggressive vs sitting back and hoping to evade every attack.
