Elite Dangerous is NOT the exact same. It's close, but Elite Dangerous has a much better deadzone mechanic for mouse control. It doesn't require you to perfectly re-center your mouse whenever you want to fly straight. This one small change would totally fix mouse control for me.
Playing with mouse and keyboard, and yes the mouse input needs work.
