    I had the same issue. Eventually I was able to return later in the game and didn't have an issue opening it, but I didn't care for having to leave it be when I was right there. For me the slice issue happened when Cal was trying to use R3 (on PS5) to view something in the distance.

I will go back later in the game to try it out! I'm sorry you had the same issue. I have just been waiting for BD to return to my shoulder before I move on after the Essence cutscenes to avoid it happening again, he seems to like sitting there staring at the purple mark where the Essence was.

@Mockingbear Going back after a while worked! I did it after the main quest on the planet, before leaving for another planet.
