However I have a keyboard and mouse, not a controller and still one one from EA has bothered to answer us about this.

I too have Keyboard and mouse, I'm only passing on a workaround. It is frustrating but these things take time and I'm sure their not working overtime to fix these issues, sadly we the consumer have to wait or use workarounds.

The settings menu is behaving oddly in general too. Trying to edit the controls (not the controller controls) you scroll down the list on the right but the list doesn't scroll when you reach the bottom. You are just moving off the bottom of the screen.

I'm running the steam version, so I can also alt-tab to steam and click Stop there, which I'm sure is the same as task manager kill process.

edit: I managed to exit with keyboard just now. 

Clicking with mouse does nothing. I had alt-tabbed out and back to the game, maybe that helped?

Navigate down to Quit on the left with arrow keys. 

Enter to select that and make the buttons in the middle of the screen selectable.

try various things to get "quit to desktop" selected. Hold space and it filled the button and worked.
