Viscid bog -- stuck

I'm attempting to reach the Mire Terror.  When I land from the zip line, I cannot reach the grapple point.  All of the online videos I've seen have Cal walking a few steps and then using the grapple.  When I walk, I always quickly sink and die.  Is there something else I need to be doing?  Note:  I'm playing on PC.
