Solved

Freeze or Grey screen/ Loading screen

Quick Specs:

Windows 10 Pro 64

Core I7-4790K @ 4.00

16 GB Ram

2 x Nvidia GTX 970 running SLI

 SSD boot drive

SWTOR is installed on HDD

I am getting constant hard freezes that force me to reboot my machine. This can happen a few minutes into a game session or an hour so. Sometimes, instead of a hard freeze the screen goes black/ grey and i see a loading screen like transitioning to a new area. I have tried everything i can think of: newest nvidia drivers, made sure all firewall/ virus exceptions are in place, turned off some of the fancier graphic settings, switched SLI profiles to alt render or single GPU... Nothing has worked. Please help!

I've set the grass to 0 and will test it out. Does the Grass slider affect more than just landscape? Many of my freezes occur on the imperial fleet or in flashpoints.

Make sure to place the driver in debug mode , evga cards for example are known to get grey screens

Reducing the Grass slider to 0 did not solve my problem. However, placing my cards in Debug Mode has seemed to stopped the grey screen/ hard freeze. I hope this gets fixed either via patch or Nvidia driver soon.

What brand of card is this ? it maybe worth checking the card manufacturer for a firmware update

the debug mode returns the card to reference clock speeds , evga for example for 980 lowered clock and increased voltage states in the firmware that helped this issue.

Edit - found one thread here on that issue.

I appreciate your help! You seem to be on to something here. I have two EVGA 970 4GB DDR5. Apparently it has 1190MHz clock speed and 1342MHz boost clock speed "to help meet the needs of demanding games" (taken directly from an advert). I'll try going to EVGA and seeing if their is a firmware update.

The post link you provided proved to be valuable as it seems I'm not the only EVGA card holder who is experiencing these problems.

least you can play stable in debug mode, honestly reference clock speeds for the 970 are fine in my view 🙂
