This system played the game as recently as this May, but the I didn't play it for a few weeks, and after that it would not work.

Most cases it is usually a firewall or antivirus issue , try the stuff in my last post at least eliminate them as a cause.
it is also worthwhile at this point if you can say hook up to your mobile internet or another internet connection and just log in quick and see if the servers appear to at least eliminate the internet connection itself.
