CAT Shards?
My wife recently began farming CAT having come into the game a bit late and wanting to bolster her Padme team. So is the only way to farm is the 5 shards for 600 crystals (0-330 costing around 39000)?...

If you want to finish anything "right now" it will cost you a lot of crystals.
She missed the opening for the event, and this is the stage CAT is in. After the 1 year mark from their release, CAT and other Conquest released characters will go to a yet to be determined event/location for farming.
While this timeline is a little different and unique to Conquest characters, many characters when released have down times where you cannot gain their shards.
