3v3 is my single favorite game mode. It requires a little more strategy and allows for more diversity at lower GP.
I have 1.5M character and 1M ships. For a typical 5v5 GA I have to place 5 character squads plus 1 ship, which means planning to use 10 character squads minimum to attack. I have 42 characters at G10/11/12. To get 10 squads of 5 I'm dipping into my G8/9s and strategically placing weaker squads on defense to reserve a strong enough offense.
For 3v3 GA I am currently placing 8 squads. This requires effectively 16x3 for a perfect offensive defensive combination.
16x3=48
10x5 = 50
Im essentially using the same number of characters. The difference is magnified in 3v3 where a duo or solo offense has a stronger impact. Where in 5v5 a trio might be required to attempt to take a banner advantage.
Either way I want more grand arena. And 3v3 breaks up the monotony of always using the same squads against each other such as arena and TW. It's always the same boring garbage. 3v3 requires theory and strategy.
