"Stunning team" update

I've mentioned in the past that I was working on a team based mostly on stunning, along with assists and some counters. It has taken several weeks for me to get the pieces together. It's still not entirely where I want it (a few stars missing here and there) but it's good enough that I'm using it in Arena, since each extra star from here out will take weeks more. This team is usually good enough to get me in the top 10 on my mostly-competitive hard launch server, though not always.

The team:
7* Phasma (L)
5* Dooku
6* Asajj
6* Daka
7* Lumi

Luminara doesn't belong on this team; her slot was supposed to go to Kylo or someone else with a stun, like Finn. However, what I've discovered about this team is that it is very slow and defensive. It takes a while to get going, and that's hard to do in the current meta with all the damage output. There's nobody on this team who really pounds out the damage, so it takes a while to kill the other guys off. Daka's heal is too poor, and frankly, using her turn on a heal is actually a waste. I found that I simply needed Lumi's heal to survive long enough to win.
I never thought of this team as defensive, but it basically is. It's designed not to beat the other team quickly, but to outlast it, giving time for Phasma's two abilities to work, while slowing down the other team with stuns and slowly wearing them down with assist attacks.
It's not super powerful, and would likely lose easily to any of the broken Poe/FOTP/Leia teams.. unless I am lucky enough to stun Poe first.. and maybe even then. But it's fun to play because it is challenging. Many of my wins are "come from behind" affairs, where my team starts out in tatters, but recovers through a combination of heals, strategic stuns, Phasma's slow ability and some assists. These are a lot of fun when they work out... not so much when they do not.
This team is also very VERY dependent on the RNG gods. This is ironic, because many of you will know that I HATE random stuff, to the point where I have never purchased a single chromium pack. However, because of its reliance on probability-based stuns and assists, I have to have at least a little bit of luck. If the stuns aren't landing and the assists aren't coming, I am probably toast. If I end up hanging up this team, that will likely be the reason why.
Asajj is the hidden gem on this team. Yes, she's slow. But she packs a wallop, especially if the stars align and she can AoE at the right time. Using her dispel on a team right after a Poggle or Phasma buffs it.. this is a thing of beauty and has turned around a game I was losing more than once. Of course if they remove her team heal, she becomes much less useful, possibly to the point where I might even have to remove her... unless they also make her dispel more reliable.
This team requires care to play and so it is probably relatively easy to beat when the AI has it.

I will probably play with this some more, and then experiment with an assist/counter team instead. This would involve pulling Daka and Asajj and replacing them with Fives and Kylo. I think this too would be fun on offense, but probably also easy to beat by others (Fives is easily ignored). Unfortunately my Fives is still only 3*, and there's so much competition for Cantina credits that it will take a while to get him to the (at least) 5* he needs to be effective. (I have to decide if I want to 7* Daka or not, and if I want to get Poe or not).

Anyway, thought some of you would find this interesting.
  • So I am now WELL out of the meta with this team. I have not changed it aside from leveling up, because I am stockpiling credits ahead of the upcoming update and only farming characters in places I need to spend energy to get XP.
Because of this I lose a lot to the Poe and Poggle teams that are everywhere. However, this makes it extra fun when I do win.
This is very much a "comeback kid" sort of team. I just fought a team with Poe, Poggle, Kylo, Sid and Lumi, quite nasty. I was using Sid myself this time instead of Asajj (though Asajj would actually have been more useful here, I made a mistake.)
Anyway, I got hammered at the start. Their Lumi crit-ability-blocked my Lumi and someone else finished her off before I could use her heal. Normally that's it, I'm toast. My Dooku was down to a sliver. But then my luck turned. I took a risk and used Daka's turn for a light heal rather than attack. Used Phasma's slow ability. And then Dooku and Daka went to work, stunning guys left and right. I ended up winning with all 4 of my guys still standing.
Of course this was lucky, that's how it is with stun characters. And before anyone starts with the "derp, see, Poe is not OP" gibberish, this wasn't by any means an optimized Poe/Poggle team, I am sure if they replace Kylo and Sid with GS and FOTP I lose even with good luck. But hey, take what I can get.
I'm hoping they tone down the damage relative to health and more interesting teams become viable.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Here's the thing: Poggle's buff is a percentage. If you use him on characters that hit for 6k, his buff is worth 3k. If you use him on characters that hit for 3k, his buff is only half as valuable. This team doesn't have the sorts of heavy hitters that are needed for Poggle to make sense. He would just be taking up space.
Without Luminara this team dies 90% of the time with or without Poggle. It's just not the sort of team that can win without a good healer, and her ability block is also very often important (for using on, say.. Poggle!) :)
As for Daka, she's the best stunner on the team AND among the fastest characters AND has a heal AND can raise dead AND allows anyone to self-resurrect. I will have a hard time ever playing any team without her again. :) Very respectable health too: mine currently has 11k.
  • I have had mixes luck with my own stun team. I had Asajj 4* as lead, Daka 5*, Dooku 4*, Phasma 6*, and Lumi 7*. I used Asajj as lead in order to speed up Daka. And I used Phasma to manipulate turn meter. Dooku was at 220% potency and all skills and most gear maxed.
Had pretty good success for a while but when hitting higher level toons the stun is harder to land, and that team was atrocious on Arena defence. I still like it but I'm beginning to slowly fall back on Phasma lead team.

@Preemo_Magin - I will probably lose patience with it soon if they don't make defense more viable. We'll see. I'm afraid that Asajj is going to be nuked in the update tomorrow. Her group heal, which isn't as described, is what tips her into viability.
@Jabberwocky - This isn't a Vader/Sid team I'm running. The stuns come 1 at a time, expire, then another comes. I rarely have more than 2 at a time. Those dispels are on cooldowns, and the AI will blow them ASAP. It would have some effect on the team, but not a lot.

I find that I often get more than 2 stuns at a time if Daka gets called on a Phasma assist, gets a double, then gets another stun or even a double on her regular turn.
