If those families were the ones you saved to the bin from the neighborhoods, DO NOT USE THEM. Those will just corrupt the neighborhood again. There is a way to save the Sims, but it's tedious and involves a lot of work in SimPE and I would not recommend it for someone who doesn't feel comfortable using SimPE. I can walk you through it if you feel comfortable, once we get your neighborhood(s) reset.
Are you playing from the Ultimate Collection or from the discs? If you're playing from the discs, did you install from compilation packs (Fun With Pets, Double Deluxe, etc)?
Edit: Are you trying to get the Broke Family tree to be correct? If so, resetting Desiderata will not fix it. You'll need to reset Pleasantview.
