If your sim can afford it, hire someone to man the cash register OR help with sales. It will help your business get going faster as more patrons will be happy.
Totally agree with the space issue. Some of my home shops are too small. My customers get in the way of each other and I have a hard time getting to them sometimes. So make it wide enough and long enough to accommodate, especially when people are checking out and they are in line.
