Sims 2 pets do not follow sims to lot

I made two pets in CAS but when we got to the lot they  were not there. When I went to the pet store to purchase a pet, they were not there when I got back. The memories section states them as obtaining a pet but doesn't show their name and they aren't there. I managed to get a cat to return with the sim and it showed up in memories with it's name and picture.

I'm also experiencing the same crashes others are experiencing at random points during the game.
