Sims 2 Ultimate Collection - Crashing

As the title says, I recently installed through the EA App, the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection which I was so looking forward to playing as on my OS, I've been unable to use my original game discs to play the game due to compatibility issues, and it's crashing.  A lot.

Major issues occur during any transition, be that from a lot to a community lot, from CAS to the neighbourhood view.  I'm at my wits end as I've tried everything I can to ensure my graphics card is recognised etc.  I was under the impression that this new collection was able to be played without issue on newer PCs with newer OS without having to play in compatibility mode.

Can anyone let me know if they've been having these issues and if they've found any fix for it.  I wanted to game for nostalgic reasons but if I can't make it work properly without all the crashing I'll just play Sims 3.

Thanks for any help.  My DX Diag details are attached.

  • UC wasn't updated at all, it's just a complete collection of the game with packs. There are a lot of tweaks that are needed to make it run properly- a patch, graphics files edits, sometimes mods. I got all of what I needed a decade ago when I installed it and backed it all up when I switched computers. I'm not sure where I got all of it, but googling the issue with things like "graphics file changes" and "4gb patch" should help turn up what you need.

Legacy Edition, the one they are selling now, is the one that was updated. It's got a lot of new bugs at the moment though. They released one patch already.

I think they meant legacy edition. But they should make sure it works before its realesed?

This is the one that I have and it's a recent download.  I'll have to check if the Legacy thing is part of it as something tells me it was.  We previously did not have access to the Sims 2 through the EA App.  I'll see what I can find out it as it doesn't give me a message telling me it won't run in my OS and I don't have it in compatibility mode but have also tried it in compatibility mode and it runs the same in each.

MiyuEmi The version of The Sims 2 shown in your screenshot is Ultimate Collection, not Legacy Collection. It is an older version of the game released in 2014 and does not support modern systems out of the box. Legacy Collection is a separate product.

If you wish to play Ultimate Collection, let me know and I can point you to some community-recommended fixes to check out.

Yeah EA wont fix the ultimate collection as they cant for a licensing issue. They will only fix the legacy addition becuase its technically 'theirs' if u get my drift.

  • Well my game works to a degree, just have to remember to save often, but I'll probably focus on Sims 3.  It does pain me however to see that EA re-released such a beloved game and everything I'm seeing is talking about bugs and crashing.  Fans of a series won't stick around if you don't respect them.

Thanks mate54 I have got the graphics rules thing and I'm running in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME and it does run okay, some towns run better than others but transitions to community lots do pose an issue quite often.  If you want to link me some other fixes I'll see if I can implement them and get it running at least with a bit more stability :)

This has been resolved.  I was able to follow an online tutorial and get all my fixes in place so there's no more crashing or shadow issues.  Thanks all for the info and sorry for the confusion!

MiyuEmi Graphics Rules Maker is one of the main fixes for UC; specifically with the following settings enabled (and allowing GRM to add your GPU to the database):

    • Force texture memory (give it at least 1024MB)
    • Disable texture memory estimate adjustment
    • Enable driver's memory manager

Otherwise, the 4GB Patch should make the game Large Address Aware, hopefully preventing crashing on larger lots. Windowed mode is the way to go too, as otherwise the game might freeze on loading screens and not let you do anything else but wait it out.
