The Sims 2 Legacy Direct3D Error

I have a problem, caused with the new update that when entering to play with any home, the game crashes with the following message "Direct3D returned an error: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL! The application will now end."

Yesterday I was playing the game without problems. But now the game is practically unplayable. I hope they fix it soon.

  • Hi all,

This issue was resolved in today's patch:

    • The “Graphics Rules.sgr” file was missing a rule that could cause “D3D” error messages

If you're still experiencing this, please create a new thread so we can continue to investigate.

    Thank you!

Mines the same. I tried fixing it in ea and then uninstalling and reinstalled but nothing. Uninstalled through ea and then downloaded through steam and still having the issue

  • I have the same problem. It is happening on both games the Sims 2 limited edition and the Sims 2 Legacy edition.

  • Same here. Before yesterday's patch, my Sims 2 was working fine. Now I get the same message as above. Attached are my diagnostics and a screenshot of the error message I receive when selecting my household.

My Sims 1 doesn't have an obvious cursor to play the game properly, and now Sims 2 isn't working after launch. While I am loving that these games have been uploaded, it would be great to play them (especially as it involved paying for the games all over again). Hoping they get fixed soon.

  • Hi I would recommend to try this.

I had the same problem on the create your character. I think I fixed it. It is working for now.

First I would recommend to find the file in which the game has been installed. for me is :

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 2 Legacy Collection

and then do a search on the search bar with .exe and find the "Sims2ep9" or the one to start the game.

then, go to properties and change compatibility to "windows 7", I also check the "disable fullscreen optimizations" and "Run this program as an administrator", then press "apply" and follow by "ok".

I also went to setting > display > Graphics and proceed it to find the game and put it to run on the best graphics card that my laptop has. "NVIDIA" in my case. If you cannot find the game, press on "add desktop app" go to this "This PC" or wherever you got the game install and find the same file from before, when you tried to do the compatibility:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 2 Legacy Collection

    and then: "Sims2ep9".

add the game and make sure you select the best "GPU preference" and "optimizations for windowed games.

then (if you can start the game, in which I hope it does as it worked for me), make sure to lower the graphics to medium, everything to medium and then I think you should be fine.

    Hope this helps!
