That always annoys me about the counters, purple_roses, so I know exactly what you mean. I have found that most of the time if you put the stove or some other appliance between the regular counter and the island counter it will make the little bend and blend together like it's supposed to. I wish it would work with just the two counters but it doesn't - so sometimes I leave the gap and sometimes I put an appliance there instead.
