To be honest, it's to protect the safety of many of us. Downloading from mediafire or another 3rd party source has it's risks far greater than the exchange. You can actually get viruses, keyloggers, etc. downloaded depending on how trusted the source is.
As for Non-EA patterns, they actually count as Custom Content in some light manner, so if it's not from EA or the store, then it's Custom Content.
