It is good for him that he does some garden work, thinking and wishing that he is near Mary. It must be so painful to wait for her to return, always having in mind that there is the possibility that she won´t come back.
It was a good idea of him to go to the garden center and search for and buy some flowers for the place around Mary´s tombstone.
This can´t help to fill the gap he is feeling but it can help to distract him from constantly thinking worrying thoughts!

he he he the talk of the cats is great! they don´t know what to think of Lee so they present him their pray, so sweet of them! They could have "waken him up" instead! :D By scratching him, I suppose?
Was the parakeet dead or just hurt? Because if he was dead then Lee is a very, very powerful warlock! Then he certainly will be able to bring Mary back!
