Need Custom Road

I'm editing Appaloosa Plains in CAW to make a custom world from it. I want to leave most of the roads alone, because of my experience with my previous custom world, which was an edit of Sunset Valley. However, I need to change the roads within the town area, to make them better fit my community lots, but the road options don't match the roads in AP. I tried to look up the tutorial for custom roads, but the page is no longer available, at least not with the link in the tutorial thread. I didn't have any luck with googling it either. I found a page in the TS3 tutorials archive, but there were no links. Can someone tell me how and where to get custom roads for CAW?

  • Maybe this one has the files you want~ http://modthesims.info/t/461499
Cawster should have the texture files in the world download

You should be able to get them from the World files opened in S3pe... listed as img files. Scroll over them to see which ones and export them (which is easier to find in a world without built lots).
  • @Rflong7 I looked at the previews of the img files in my working copy of AP, in SP3e, and the textures are all there. So I guess I have them already, but when I use the ranch asphalt roads or intersections in CAW, they look identical to the default ones. I don't have all that much experience in CAW. The only EA town I've ever edited before this is Sunset Valley, and I have never used anything but the defaults. Is there something else I need to do?
  • I'm not understanding... so I downloaded and opened up the world. Yes, it does only use the default textures in all the roads when trying to use the pre-setup roads.

    You'll have to reset them.
*Download and extract the textures; info given (if you don't want to export them from the world file).
*Each road shows the texture it uses so when opening to edit- use the correct texture in your files and it will show up right.
The old location is not on your computer and why it shows black in the edit list. :)

The textures not in your CAW files unless you download and extract them to your files. You'll still have to edit the road files once installed, it seems.
  • OK, I want to know if I'm understanding you correctly. I've never done any of this, but I found a tutorial on how to extract textures from worlds. That's the first one I need, right? Then once I get them exported into my world file, are you saying that whenever I place roads, I'll also have to edit each one to give it the correct texture? I don't know how to do that, but I found a tutorial that tells how to make default overrides for road textures. Would that work for this?

    Thank you for your help.
  • I would have thought you got the world files from Cawster, which had the textures in the download when I just dl Appaloosa Plains. If I were you I'd download them from Cawster instead of going through the hassle of exporting them and hoping you have them all.

(Let me see if I'm on the same page- you want the roads that are in the world but are not showing right when you use the Road Tool to place them on the world map?)

What I'm saying is- I checked the roads in Appaloosa Plains CAW files and they don't show right when placing, as I thought you said. You'll have to click on the road you want to use and choose edit (in the road tool panel). Like you're making a new road but you're editing the roads already there.

Let me get on my desktop and get some pictures.

*Once you reset the roads in the Road Tool panel, it will reset all the roads on the map which are under that name (these are not default roads) and any new ones you place.

    .................
Remember- once you edit the roads that the map uses, it will change all the roads under that name:
    To edit them-

  • Thank you so much! That's just the information I needed. I had not tried right-clicking on the items in the road tool list. When you said I'd have to edit them, I thought you meant in S3pe, so that's where I was looking to try to find some way to do that. Needless to say, I wasn't getting anywhere.

I was going to download the files from the link you gave me, but it has a huge warning about reading all instructions before downloading anything, which kind of scared me off, because there aren't any instructions on that page, or any link to any. So I wasn't sure if he meant just the usual instructions for downloading CC or if there was some special information I would need for those particular files. I also wasn't sure where to put them once I extracted them, until I read the tutorial. I guess I need to extract them, then us S3pe to export them into my world file, right?

And yes, you are correct. When I chose the Ranch Asphalt for the road, the road section I laid down did not match the existing roads, but was identical to the ones that place with the Base Game Road selected.
