Build-n-Share Challenge # 17 - "Preparations..."
This Week’s Challenge Specifics:
You check your directions one more time. You’ve been walking for a bit, and the location seems a bit off-the-beaten-path. Of course, the address is a little unusual as well. “The tree with the ladder by it.” Hmm.
Just as you are about to turn around to retrace your steps around the pond, you hear the clinking sound of metal as a ladder slowly lowers to the ground. You look up to see who you only presume can be your client, dressed in camouflage.
“If you don’t mind,” he yells down, “could we meet up here?”
Well, this certainly is new. “Sure,” is all you manage to say.
Before you know it, you are climbing hand over hand into a tree. Once you’re up, “Colonel” Fearful, as he’s asked you to refer to him, pulls the ladder up behind you. You consider a “love what you’ve done with the place,” but you’re just a little unsure if Colonel would be in on the joke.
Colonel walks around on the platform and peers in each direction. Seemingly satisfied with something, he begins pacing as he talks.
“I’m sure you’ve heard the news. It won’t be long now. I’ve been saving for quite some time, $162,594 so far; I knew something like this would happen. And now it’s confirmed. THEY’RE coming. I knew it would be something big, something new, something different. But mummies? So strong! What if I fell? I do that all the time, you know.” He shudders at the thought.
“I know they prefer the dark underground, but what if they start to adapt? I just can’t take that risk. I want my house in the air. And above the water over there. He points to the pond. Do you think you could do that?”
“So a floating house over water?” Yep, definitely a new one.
“Yes. I’ll need stairs. Just a single flight, to get up. I couldn’t get that teleporter I’ve been trying to secure, unfortunately. But if you could tuck the stairs away, a little hidden by some trees or bushes or something, that would probably be OK. And then they could come up only one at a time, by which time I could hopefully figure out another way out. I wish we still had those helicopters…”
Wow, he’s really thought this thing out.
“I don’t want any of the construction on the ground level at all. And water beneath the home, so there’s only one way up, using that single flight of stairs. And a couple of doors to go through to get in, so I can add lots of locks and blocks. I’d like the home to blend in with the nature, so it’s not easily seen, too. As far as windows, nothing too big. I don’t want to feel like they could be watching…Those little high ones would be OK, I suppose, for some light.”
“What would you like for the interior?”
“Well, I’m hoping there will be a few others who may want to join me. I think more will see I am right as the time draws near. I’ve been leaving secret signs and messages around for those who might be watching for them. I hope they will come soon to help with preparations. I’d like 8 beds in a large bedroom and a common bathroom with 4 separate shower and restroom stalls for privacy. I don’t want anything too technological. I’m afraid those communications will be lost anyway, and I never trust anything I see on TV. We’ll need some entertainment, though, so some books and games would be great. And there might be a kid or two, so some toys and a crib might be helpful, too. Maybe a treadmill; we’ll need to stay fit in case of an attack. On the roof or a high balcony, I’d like to have an area for a telescope, for keeping watch. Maybe I could get a teleporter there eventually. I haven’t given up on that! And I’ll definitely need sturdy rails up there, I am clumsy, afterall. I want the lights to mostly consist of candles. It may be all we have at some point. Ohh, and we’ll need a few fridges in the home. We’ll need to stockpile what we can.”
He stops suddenly and runs to one edge. You can’t help but be deathly still. His nervousness is certainly catching.
“I’m saying too much. Someone might hear. I think that’s it. I appreciate your speed. There is so much to be done!”
You start to reach for Colonel’s hand, but he seems a little nervous about it. You just give him a big smile instead. “I’m so glad to help.”
“There will always be room for you, too, if you want.”
You give him another smile as you start back down the ladder.
