Build-n-Share Challenge #167-168 • Beach Blanket Bingo
"Drat," you think to yourself as you end yet another seemingly unproductive screening call from a prospective client. "I'm not getting a single thing done today." Rose has been out for three days now on her annual week-long vacation, and you are beginning to sorely regret the decision not to hire a temp in her place. "I'm really going to have to see about giving her a raise when she returns," you mutter.
As you try to straighten your desk to get organized for the day, you hear the door to the outer office open. Jumping quickly to your feet, you bump into the corner of the desk in your haste to make the new arrivals feel welcome. Gritting your teeth against the pain, you put on a gracious face and limp out of your office. A young, rather casually dressed couple is standing awkwardly by the front door.
"Welcome!" you gush. "You must be Hank and Pauline. It's so nice to finally meet you!" The couple looks a little panicked at your approach, and you mentally make the note to tone it down a notch. Still fighting against the sure-to-be-bruised throbbing in your leg, you take a step back and try to smile naturally at the couple. They hesitantly return your smile. "Please, come in and make yourselves comfortable," you say as you gesture towards your office. "Can I get you anything to drink? Coffee, tea, juice... water maybe?"
"Juice would be great if it's fresh-squeezed," Hank responds. "Or spring water if you have it." Pauline nods in agreement.
You cringe inwardly realizing you've forgotten to replenish the fresh juice that surely expired a few days ago, mentally chalking up another reason that Rose deserves a raise. "Spring water it is! I'll be right back," you respond merrily and hurry off to prepare drinks for your clients, again kicking yourself for not having hired someone to take care of these sorts of things in Rose's absence.
Several moments later, your clients are comfortably settled in your office and ready to talk to you about their needs. "So," you begin, "I understand that you are looking to upgrade to a larger house? Expanding your family as I understand?"
Pauline smiles at this. "Yes," she answers with a glowing smile. "I'm about 4 months along at this point, and our babies will be arriving sometime in March."
"Babies? As in plural?" you ask.
"Oh, yeah!" enthuses Hank. "We've got two cooking. It's going to be epic!" You can't help but smile at his obvious joy.
"We've been living right on the beach over on Sunsong Avenue, and we love it," Pauline explains. It's a small place though, and we really need a larger one for us and the twins."
"Yep," says Hank mournfully. "I can see the waves from my front porch be out there to catch some in 5 minutes flat if they're breaking right..." he trails off. "But," he says firmly, "it's time to grow up. We've got to have space for the new tiny humans. If it takes me 20 minutes to reach the beach, that's just the price I have to pay." He looks a little dejected for a moment, but brightens as soon as he glances at Pauline. She returns his smile.
"So," you probe, "what size is your current house, and what size are you looking to upgrade to?"
"The way it's set up now, it's 1 bedroom, 1 1/2 baths," answers Pauline. "Although the workout room is technically a bedroom. For our new house, we need at least two bedrooms - a nursery and a master - and we'd like another one that we can make into a combination workout room and study. I'm going to be working from home for a while after the kids are born, so a home office area for me is a must."
You nod in agreement as you rapidly jot down notes. "And the babies..." you inquire, "Do you know if they're going to be boys or girls?"
"Nope!" responds Hank emphatically. "And we don't want to know until the big reveal. The birth, I mean, " he adds as if unsure if you've understood his meaning. Pauline smiles indulgently at her fiancé at this.
"Oh, yes," you respond. "So, the nursery should be decorated in neutral colors?"
"I like tan or grey with maybe yellow or green accents," Pauline interjects. They will look great no matter what sex the twins turn out to be."
"Definitely," you agree. "And for the main parts of the house... do you have any color or style preferences?"
Hank interjects here. "Well, I'll be the first to admit it - I'm pretty much a beach bum. I've lived by the shore my entire life. I know a beach-front house is not in our budget at this point, but I'd love it if you could bring that vibe to our new place."
Pauline nods in agreement. "And even though we're going to be parents, we're not, like, going to turn into OUR parents," she shudders slightly but giggles as well. "A fresh, beachy vibe is what we're looking for. Maybe a little modern twist. Or even rustic. We trust your judgment. As long as there's room for us and the new babies, we're going to be happy.
"And the budget?" you inquire.
"We can get about 55,00 for our current house, and I've saved up almost 15,000 from giving surfing lessons over the past few summers," Hank responds. "So 70,000 would be our max budget. If you can get it looking fab for under that amount it would be a bonus. Any little bit we have left over will be a nest egg for the kiddo's college fund."
You smile in anticipation of creating a new home for this endearing couple, jotting down notes as you interview them further. This is going to be a fun challenge!
