Challenge #146 - Best Laid Plans III
Due: Wednesday July 30th, Midnight CMT
Sitting at the desk in your office, you stare wistfully out of the window, thinking about how quickly time seems to pass these days. There is a knock at your office door, sighing you turn back towards the room and say “Come in.”
Rose pokes her head around the door and says “Kaye is here, she has the twins with her, would you like me to try and keep them entertained??”
“Rose you are a life saver.” You say, then cover your mouth with your hand as you realise what you said.
Rose looks at you and you see understanding and compassion in her eyes.
“I'll bring her through, and get the kettle on for a pot of green tea.”
You rise from your chair as Kaye enters the room. You see that she looks a little wan, worried, you cross the room and envelop her in a hug. “Come on Kaye, sit down.” You guide her to the closest chair. She lets you lead her and that concerns you even more.
You sit next to her, in the other visitor chair and ask where Kieran is.
“He couldn't.... He just couldn't...”
You notice tears welling in those green eyes that look a little pallid, not at all the colour they were when you first met her.
“And Kaiden?”
“Oh, he's at school, we didn't want to disrupt his routine too much.”
“Of course.”
You sit thinking about tiny little bundle you met on that first job for the Johnson's. You find it difficult to believe that he is at high school now, and about to graduate at that. It's amazing how people come and go in and of our lives, you think. Take Kay, little did you know when you helped her struggle up the office steps all those years ago, that she would become one of your best friends. You find yourself reliving some of the memories of the Johnson's you have been privy to. The birth of the twins, now in their 7th year, the death of Kieran's mum 5 years ago, countless barbecues and dinners you have been invited to. You were even lucky enough to witness one of the twin's first steps!! Now that Kieran's father had passed on, you realised it left Kay and Kaiden as orphans, Kaye having lost her parents just before you met her. It was no wonder that the woman sat in front of her was devastated, Kelvin had been her father as much as Kieran's for the last 17 years, especially with them living on the same property. You finally wonder, why Kaye wanted to meet you at the office instead at either of your homes.
“I'm pregnant again.”
As if reading your mind, she blurts it out, as if it's a bad thing.
“But Kaye, surely that's wonderful news?”
“In the circumstances, no, it feels devastating, to know that these new little bundles will never know any of their grandparents.”
“Does Kieran know yet??” You ask, fearing you already know the answer.
“No, I haven't told him yet. I don't know how.”
As you lean over and let her lean on your shoulder, there is another soft rap at the door. Rose steps through with the tea pot and two china cups and saucers. She sets he tray down on the desk and gently lays a hand on your other shoulder. You hear shrieking coming through the open door, but this doesn't seem to stir Kaye, so Rose quietly leaves to deal with the twins.
“Come on honey, let's have a drink.”
“Of course, thank you! I'm sorry, I really didn't know who else to tell. Kieran has started planning another remodel and I wanted to come and see you first, so that you knew what you would be getting in the middle of.”
“But you two are OK right?” You ask hesitantly as you pour the tea.
She sighs, “Yes, I guess we are, but how do I tell him?!”
“Well, if I were you I wouldn't tell him, like you just told me!”
A flicker of a smile passes your friends lips and is gone as quickly as it came.
“No, I think I should at least pretend to be happy.”
“Oh Kaye, sweetheart, you should be happy about this, it's OK to be happy about it, you do know that right??”
“I don't think I do!”
“Oh Kaye, of course you can be happy about this, Kelvin would be over the moon wouldn't he?”
“Yes, you are right, of course he would be. Thank you, I knew you would understand.”
Sensing a change of conversation might be the best course of action you say “So, Kieran's planning a remodel hey?”
“Yes, he wants to tear down the annex! But I wonder if we should turn it into a place for Kaiden. You know, he's graduating soon, he'll want some privacy when he comes back from college in the holidays.”
“I understand his point, but yes, I think you might be right, re-purposing is always more constructive than demolishing.”
Reluctantly you realise you have to put the subject back on the slight bump, now that your attention has been drawn to it, you wonder how on earth Kieran couldn't know.
“So, how far along are you?”
“I've just got over the first trimester, it was so different to when I was just carrying twins.”
“What do you mean, just carrying twins?” You ask.
“Well, I went in for my scan last week, there are three of them in here.” She says as she strokes her belly and looks down at it fondly.
“Oh... My.... Well... Wow!!”
“I so wish I had known sooner, at least Kelvin would have known he was going to be grandpa again.”
Tears start to well again.
“Kaye, you weren't to know he would be taken so suddenly.”
“No, I know, at least that's what I'm trying to tell myself.”
Feeling slightly frustrated with this strong woman you had grown to love and respect, you raise your voice.
“Now listen to me Kaye Johnson, Kelvin had a wonderful life, filled with happiness and good memories, and I am darn sure that he would not want to see you questioning yourself like this. You are going to have triplets, they are going to need you to pull yourself together, and what about that pair out there?? They must have been running rings around you this last month or so. You're telling this is good for them?”
You see how startled she is to be spoken to so firmly. But you also see her straighten her back and look a little more composed, a little colour returns to her cheeks.
“You are right, of course you are. I have been so selfish. My babies are so important to me. Especially these ones in here, they really need me in a good frame of mind don't they? Oh my, their lives will have started with such negativity? How did I not realise this before? Thank you, for having the courage to talk sternly to a tearful pregnant woman, that was very brave of you.” This time she smiles and that sparkle is back in those emerald eyes.
“Well, you were already tearful, I don't see how I could have made the situation much worse!” You joke.
“Now, let's get down to business. What is this project going to consist of?”
“Yes, let's start planning for the future.”
Brief
For those who took part in #227-228 take your existing 60x60 lot and make the following additions:
• The twin nursery needs to be turned into a twin child's room (no specifics on gender here, do as you wish)
• You need to add a triple nursery to the home with an attached bathroom.
• Another guest room with attached bathroom.
• Take the annex you built for Kelvin and Kathleen and turn it into a home for Kaiden. The specs for this remain the same, i.e. a fully functioning residence, with 2 bedrooms (one of which must have an attached bathroom), a separate bathroom, kitchen, dining space and living area. although, it no longer needs to be wheelchair friendly. As for the décor, well, it's for a teenage boy about to head off to college!
• You will need to find an area in the grounds for a new weeping willow, somewhere for the Johnson's to go and pay their respects to the loved ones who are no longer with them.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE INTERIOR WALLS ARE KEPT TO MATCH THE PLAN GIVEN, WE WILL NEED TO SEE OVERHEADS OF THE MAIN RESIDENCE!!
For those who took part in #223-224 but didn't take part in #227-228:

A double children's room (no specifics on gender here, do as you wish!)complete with attached bathroom, 2 guest rooms with attached bathrooms. You will also need to add a triple nursery complete with attached bathroom. The interior walls you have built (from the plan) need to stay the same, but you can expand the exterior.
Kaye doesn't know what gender their babies are, so the décor needs to be gender neutral.
• Design and build a separate dwelling for Kaiden to move into, it needs to be a fully functioning residence, with 2 bedrooms (one of which must have an attached bathroom), a separate bathroom, kitchen, dining space and living area. As for the décor, well, it's for a teenage boy about to head off to college!
• You will need to find an area in the grounds for a new weeping willow, somewhere for the Johnson's to go and pay their respects to the loved ones who are no longer with them.

The Budget
Each challenge has a budget of $250,000, so your final build can not cost more than $750,000.
Optional Challenge
There are a couple of optional challenges for this one. If you started at the beginning, we want to see how your build evolved, so before and after pics are a must!
If you joined in after the first part of the challenge, we want to find out more about your Johnson family, who are they, what are their traits, what are their hobbies etc... We want to see them enjoying their newly expanded home.
You have three weeks to complete this challenge, as if you are starting from scratch it is a mammoth task! (I might just have to join in on this one myself...)

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: I made the family and got Kaye pregnant with triplets Just for fun.
Kaye is a home chef with lots of experience and has written several children's books. She has 3 college degrees, Arts, Communications and Physical Education. Kieran has 3 college degrees, Business, Science& Medical, and Technology. He is working as a scientist now.

While I did start from scratch I wanted to do the second of the optional challenges that focuses on the family. So I moved them in after I finished the house and lived their lives for a while. To me the Johnson family is a bit messy and a bit crazy with Kaye working as a teacher and Kieran working as a doctor, but they are normal and loving to each other. That was what I tried to convey.

While I did start from scratch I wanted to do the second of the optional challenges that focuses on the family. So I moved them in after I finished the house and lived their lives for a while. To me the Johnson family is a bit messy and a bit crazy with Kaye working as a teacher and Kieran working as a doctor, but they are normal and loving to each other. That was what I tried to convey.
