Using the Half-Height Tool to Make Foundations

Most of us are aware of making substandard height walls using the "constrainFloorElevation false" cheat. I have used the cheat to make foundations using walls many times. Here's a different twist on the subject. The cool half-height walls that are now available in game make an interesting foundation for houses as well, but it takes a little more patience.
Here's what it looks like at the start:

Next raise the ground slightly nearby your full-height walls and create a small foundation block.

With "constrainFloorElevation false" enabled use the terrain flatening tool and drag from the foundation block over the full-height walls.

This is what it should look like:

Ok, that's the basic idea. Now let's put it to work and build an American Foursquare home. Pulling out shows the larger foundation. I raised the ground the house will be on as well so the steps when added meet the ground better. If you want a basement, nows the time to add it or you'll get the dreaded "cannot install stairs within a foundation" warning.

Here I am using the flatten terain tool to lower the full-height walls.

Fully lowered and cleaned up:

Next add flooring:

Then steps:

Nearly finished Shingle-style Foursquare:

I like the extra 3D detail the half-height wall with it's top bullnose edging gives to a foundation. Hope you enjoyed this little mini-tutorial.

  • That's so cool. I love putting a half wall as a deck but I haven't tried this, will definitely do so on my next build - thank you :D
  • Thanks Bluebell, bluenote, MacFusty and Yanti. Glad you liked my little tutorial. Bluebell nice job on your "Washed Out Shack) beach house (http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=3963300) The porch is built off half walls in very similar way to what I am describing here.
    Kirk :)
  • Great tutorial. Thanks Kirk for giving permission to post on TS3 Creators' Consortium. That link is what lead me here.

Thank you Merry! I love experimenting with the EA tools and learning from others experiments. When I started a year ago I could only figure out how to make "box-homes", lol.

  • Ooh! Another fantastic creative idea from Kirk!! Also, another bookmark for Judi.
  • Judi, thanks for bumping this up! I've taken too much time away and I've missed so much.
Kirk - you're such a show-off! :D Thank you for sharing such great building tips along with your wonderful builds. I'd like to see your help threads indexed somewhere - I noticed the roof one on a quick scan through the forum the other day, so I'm thinking you have several of these?

Off to visit a few studios and get caught up.
