I need to thank texansky for rescuing the original rules for the 112 Day Challenge and I am going to link to them for anyone curious or interested, because she added some important notes below the original rules.
Over time I have adapted some rules to better suit my desired gameplay and the Sims I have as Challengers. It is important to remember that as a player you are building a Sim you intend to use in the game after their Challenge is complete. Stay true to your Sim as much as the Challenge. "Get to Know" your Sim during the Challenge and that will impact how you view that Sim when you encounter them later in another Save ... Create that Connection as well as developing the Sim.
Rule Adaptations for Kathy Ragsdale Challenge
Lot Size ... In the initial rules I limited the lot size to encourage behaviors and lower lot cost as well as bills. Since then, I have allowed larger lots with more vegetation in attempts to make the lot more aesthetically appealing and to reduce starting money available as well as slightly increase the bills. Note ... This makes starting the Challenge a little harder.
I initially limited the lot size and required a parking spot to discourage Challengers from simply Gardening for the majority of their Challenge. That's not necessary if your challenging Sim intends to be a Gardener or Nectar Maker after the Challenge. However ... Note that Gardening is not available all the time in three of the four seasons and it consumes a lot of time if it is a sole means of monetary production.
Currently, Kathy Ragsdale's lot is 30x40 - 9 Cottonwood Ct. ~ Hidden Springs. With all the adjustments, added landscaping, and a few items it costs 13,416 simoleons. Note that adding trees and bushes, landscaping timbers, and fencing increases the price and value of the lot. That will affect your Challenger's starting money and bills.
Parking Spot and Car Rule ... The same as lot size, the rule was added to tailor behaviors and limit space. It's not necessary if it doesn't match your Challenger and you still attempt the Challenge in good faith. Kathy Ragsdale didn't want a car and wanted a bicycle instead.
Items Rule ... I added two more items to the Items Allowed, for function more than anything else. I used 'buydebug' to put a chest from World Adventures on the lot. It doesn't make the Challenge any easier and it will slightly increase the price of the lot. It was added because your Challenger's Inventory can get cluttered during the Challenge, and the extra storage space is welcome. I also allow my Challengers to keep the camera (ChannonTech Outlaw SE) each Sim may have in their inventory when they start the Challenge.
The Challenger is also allowed to sell the University Bucket (20 simoleons) and the Time Portal (725 simoleons) if and when they appear on the Challenger's lot.
Town and Community Lots Rule (new) ... It doesn't matter what Town or Community Lots you use as long as the Lots are set prior to starting the Challenge. Community Lots cannot be adjusted, added to, or upgraded after the Challenge starts, unless the Challenger purchases the lot and makes improvements out of their bank account.
Now that the basics are covered, let's see how Kathy handles her first week in the Challenge ... Good luck to those that attempt the Challenge and as always ... Happy Simming ... 💖
This will cover Kathy's first week of the challenge in limited detail to give those who are interested an idea of how the Challenge can work for the Challenger. It is not a blueprint for activities and just an example of how I started things out with Kathy.
Keep in mind that the first week is the hardest week of the Challenge and will lay the groundwork for the rest to come. Gardening is only available for portions of the Challenge due to weather and is a requirement. Finding a Life Fruit seed is a necessity so don't ignore the need. Planting the Life Fruit seed will require significant Gardening skill and time to actually grow the required Life Fruit. Fishing freshwater is also not a year-round opportunity, and you will need at least one Deathfish.
This post will cover Day 1 (Summer-Sunday 08:00 hrs.) through Day 8 (Summer - Sunday 23:59 hrs.) ... It is recorded in a 24-hour clock (rounded to closest 15 minutes) to give players an idea of how each day works. This is just an example of how a player can manage the Sim's needs ... As well as why you never have to have a poor or struggling Sim ... 😆🤣😂

That concludes Kathy's first week of the 112 Day Challenge ... Again, it is just an example of how it can be done and not a requirement of any kind. Hints include start gardening early ... Go to gym to gain the skill necessary to jog and advance Athletic Skill jogging when possible ... Alternate days, items and consignment stores, skipping days to increase returns ... Know your baits and locations ... Don't forget flowers can make you rich ... 😆🤣😂
For those who insist it cannot be done ... Kathy just did it ... 👍
Lifetime Reward Points: 20995 - Kathy will purchase 'Simunity' and 'Immune to Heat' ... Kathy did get Sick once, she had Allergies when picking flowers as well, and once got Sunburned ... Those still were not enough to crush her Mood and she just kept on trucking.
Net Worth: 28447 simoleons ... Kathy is also invested as a Partner with two businesses (13000 simoleons - Redeemable, for those who don't know how investments work, The Challenger is just 'parking' their money in investments during the Challenge because that will earn them more money. They don't need money for anything [other than bills that pale in comparison and buying the Ambrosia Recipe] and they have to sell all their investments at the end of the Challenge.)
Skills Speak for Themselves ... 👍
Where Kathy is still a long way from her goals, she still has 104 days left in the Challenge. I won't make another boring post like this one and those to come will be more about the 'story' and exciting things Kathy discovers as her wealth and knowledge grow. She also has a lot left to do for the Community and we will see what she comes up with for projects. With the first week in the rearview mirror, the hard work is done ... 🤣
As with a lot of my Challengers, the Summer Season is a busy Season. Taking advantage of good weather and consistent growing conditions, a Garden becomes a priority. Currently She is growing 10 Red Bean Coffee plants. She has routinely collected seeds and planted other plants, including a pumpkin plant. She even planted a special seed which turned out to be Flame Fruit. However, Kathy has yet to find a Life Fruit seed, which could be a bit troubling if that trend continues and with only one week left in the Summer.
Kathy will press on though, continuing to look for the special seed. She has gained quite a bit of money occasionally visiting the Summer Festival. Flowers are plentiful and lucrative, well worth the effort.
Also taking advantage of the weather, Kathy registered as an Angler in order to complete a Challenge Requirement early in the challenge. With Deathfish being the most profitable catch, she can often be found in graveyard at midnight, She spends a good portion of the afternoon also catching bait for the effort. Kathy is currently Level 8 in the Self-Employed Angler Career.
Wandering around the graveyard at night often provides excellent Photography options and lucrative photographs. Kathy has befriended several ghosts, mainly because her hours are odd, and socializing is something she does when the opportunity presents itself. The fishing has provided some much-needed income and helped her secure a foothold in investments.
Kathy Rarely visits town, as her day just doesn't have enough hours in it. She has added Partnerships with the Corporate Towers, Bistro and the Theater, as well as simply buying the Bookstore and Grocery Store.
Kathy visits the Local Dojo in the late afternoon or evening on most day. She may break Space Rocks until she is fatigued as well as socializing with others... And repairing or cleaning what may be broken or dirty. She has made some decent money from gems but still hasn't found the one she is looking for. It can be time consuming and sometimes not worth the effort. Kathy has Mastered Martial Arts and her Athletic skills though.
After tending the garden around noon, Kathy decided to take the third Saturday of her Challenge off. She just hung out at the festival meeting people and making friends. She also learned to skate, played a few of the games and even entered a hot dog eating contest. Over the two weeks, she was able to earn enough Lifetime Rewards Points to purchase Immune to Cold, Steel Bladder and Hardly Hungry.
Net Worth: 164678 simoleons (that's more than halfway to the Challenge Goal of 250000)
The last week of the Summer was a fishing grind ... Most days were spent catching either bait, food or fertilizer to stockpile. Kathy managed to max out her Self-Employed Angler Career, completing the career requirement of the Challenge in the first season. She wouldn't have been able to do so if she hadn't stocked a pond in the park near her lot with Deathfish.
At over a 1000 simoleons per fish by the end of Summer, she was able to make some investments. Gardening wasn't working in her favor though. She still hasn't found the elusive Life Fruit seed she is going to need to complete the challenge. She has however added the Hospital to her partnerships, and she owns the Bookstore, Grocery Store, Diner, Bistro, Theater, and Doo Peas Tower.
Kathy profited from several forms of income, including cutting and selling gems she found when exploring or gather when breaking space rocks. Flowers brought in a nice windfall as well occasionally. She caught a lot of bugs , but has been saving those for another venture instead of selling them.
Kathy took off the last day of Summer and visited the park once the festival had left. She mainly socialized and enjoyed the long needed relaxation. She ran into the Vanderburg's having a picnic and wrapped up her Photography skills snapping shots of landmarks around town.
The first day of Fall didn't seem any different as the weather was nice. Kathy is excited about the change in season though, as it marks an opportunity to explore different options towards meeting the challenge goals.
She has also already completed the wealth requirement ... And her skills are on par with her current goals ... Happy Simming ... 💖
First Week of Fall (week 5) ... The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly ... 😆🤣😂
One of the great things about the challenge and living outside, is when you can hear folks protesting in the park next to your lot during a thunderstorm and show up in time to notice Jessica Willow got struck by lightning waving her sign around.
However ... The police won't show up to remove any burglars and you better be able to take care of them yourself,
A lot of things changed with the Seasons for Kathy. She is a bit worried because she still hasn't found a Life Fruit seed and her garden has already frozen once. The growing seasons left in the challenge are either questionable or nonexistent. Anyway ... Kathy did take the opportunity to knock out at least 10 hours of Community Service raking leaves at a few local establishments (ones she doesn't own).
Kathy advanced her Writing skills and wrote a Romance Novel that will bring in an additional 2452 simoleons a week in royalties. She did so using the computers at the GreenWire Java Hut and Internet Cafe. It was also a great place for meeting folks and having a little fun.
With the gardening and fishing slowing down and not consuming as much time, Kathy took a great deal of the insects and butterflies she had been catching to the Research Center, and after enough research she started turning them into Plasma Bugs (netting a total of 20400 simoleons). it took a few days and failed attempts, but Kathy advanced her skills in Science greatly doing so.
Which leads us back to a choice she made during the Summer. Kathy had spent some time studying Martial Arts during the Summer and even advanced to a point she could break Space Rocks looking for gems. It was time consuming and didn't always fit her schedule. It also had a decent return in money when cutting the gems and consigning them, but not enough to kick her to a new level. She did happen to find a Pink Diamond though, which she saved and never cut.
After advancing in her Science skills, Kathy analyzed the Pink Diamond a dozen times, then cloned a dozen Pink Diamonds. On Saturday, Kathy took the dozen cloned gems to the Elixir Shop, cut them into heart shaped gems, then directly sold the cut gems and dust from her inventory for a total of 96499 simoleons ... 🤣
Kathy immediately went to town to buy the Hospital and the Stadium. At the end of Kathy's fifth week in the Challenge, as long as she doesn't sell or lose the Pink Diamond she has ... She can make roughly 100000 simoleons a day. She won't do that because it would get boring for the remaining 11 weeks and there are still some other challenge requirements she needs to get done ... But money is no longer a question for the rest of her little Sim life.
Lifetime Rewards Purchased: Meditative Sleep, and Fast Learner
Net Worth: Kathy has 595 simoleons in her bank account ... And 461552 simoleons in investments and property ... 🤣
As the weather changes, so does Kathy's routine. Gold mornings put a damper on her gardening and fishing, but the previous week she broke the code on making money. She has enough fish and fruit stored to make it, and she is contemplating her next moves in the challenge. She is somewhat certain that she has found a Life Fruit seed and hopes she can produce at least on prior to Winter. She has also had her first Alien visitor without encounter.
Kathy spent the Sunday through Tuesday just making money. She has now purchased every public business in town, as well as the GreenWire and Meadow Beach. Certain that her investments will be suitable (already meeting the challenge requirement in net worth), Kathy started focusing on other aspects of the challenge.
On Wednesday and Friday she raked leaves around town for a total of 18.5 hours as Community Service. While Nicholas Riverhawk and Andrew Song had fun playing in the leaf piles, Roberto Vega stopped by and actually took care of disposing them.
Pulling community service at or around the gym, gave her the benefit of showers close by. Kathy also took the opportunity to pump a little iron before relaxing in the hot tub there.
On Thursday, Kathy worked on her second novel, after riding her bike to town early and purchasing the Shoreline Cabin. That evening she visited the cabin since she had chosen it as her project property for the challenge. She scanned the property and started getting ideas of how to upgrade it. She also met locals like Jenny Lho and asked them for input. Kathy the realized that she would have a bit trouble modernizing the property while managing to keep the rustic feel the locals were more pleased with.
Kathy also visited the Fall Festival, but there weren't too many people there. She went through the Haunted House but was not impressed. In attempts to challenge fate she decided roaming through the catacombs at the cemetery might be more challenging. And they were, as she was caught calling 911 shortly after being mauled by a bear ... 🤣
Her visit to the catacombs inspired her to start a third novel ... Past Lives ... On Saturday. It being Fall and Emmaline Rhoen throwing a Swim Party not even having a swimming pool or hot tub, Kathy could not pass up the opportunity to make her first party appearance. The evening was interesting to say the least, and Kathy made a Pumpkin Pie for everyone to enjoy.
Net Worth: 987678 simoleons
Lifetime Rewards Purchased This Week: Acclaimed Author and Extra Creative
Worth just under a million (which will reward her 20000 Lifetime Reward Points, and it isn't even her Lifetime Wish), Kathy has enough money to start renovations on the Shoreline Cabin. Six weeks into a sixteen-week journey, if she does grow a Life Fruit Plant and stays on track, she will have this challenge wrapped up. At this point, Kathy starts shooting for the record books in how she finishes the challenge, competing more against previous challengers than the challenge itself.
Less than halfway through she has a solid grip on things ... Happy Simming ... 💖
Kathy's Community Lot Challenge Project - The Shoreline Cabin (Hangout)
I don't know how familiar you are with the original Shoreline Cabin property in Hidden Springs, but it was in a beautiful spot. Of course, that did nothing for it as it lacked almost everything. The building didn't take advantage of the views available, the furnishings were very outdated, there were few entertainment options, and the fixtures were very low budget. It had some rustic charm but that was quickly overshadowed by the fact it tended to suggest spiders and mice might be comfortable there ... 🤣😂.
Kathy struggled for a while deciding how to move forward with the project, because she was not pleased at all with the existing structure. She even contemplated bulldozing the entire site and building a more modern structure but kept getting feedback from members of the community that they preferred a more rustic and cozy option for their hangout and occasional getaway.
Some community members were upset when Kathy did bulldoze almost the entire lot and left little of the original structure intact. She reassured the people upset that she was just getting a fresh start, and that they might be surprised when she was finished. Needless to say, the finished cabin turned out to be more than twice the size of the original cabin and offered a great deal more while still keeping some of its rustic charm and coziness.
Then first thing Kathy did as the cabin was being finished up and opened to the public, was fireproof the fireplace to protect her investments.
The new cabin included a game room and study suitable for leisure as well as pleasant conversation. There were bookshelves stocked with all the favorites and very comfortable furniture. Kathy had also increased the number of windows to take advantage of the splendid views the property offered.
The rebuild also included a bar and buyable nectar racks where patrons could find what they wanted. Socializing was something Kathy thought was important to provide for.
The kitchen area was completely upgraded ... And in short, no longer looked like it was stuck in the 50's. The bathroom was also upgraded and modernized. At twice its previous size, it boasted better fixtures and no longer looked like a possible murder scene ... 🤣😂
Last but not least, the previous cabin had a small, cramped bedroom with a somewhat questionable bed and little amenities. The new bedroom takes up a quarter of the interior space and offers much more comfort. It's a bedroom that actually suggests someone doesn't have to be desperate to consider staying the night ... 🤣😂
Fully upgraded to level 3, Kathy is hoping to get a decent return on her investment. Needless to say, she is pleased with the outcome either way. She has a call into the Challenge Monitors wondering if it is possible she spends the night in a comfortable bed at the cabin, or whether that would violate the rules in any way. They haven't gotten back to her, because it is a question no one has ever asked. For the most part in a Challenge, community lots are usable and not 'off limits'. However, it might not be in the 'best spirit' of the Challenge.
Happy Simming ... 💖
....
Edit: The Challenge Monitors came back with a split decision, so it got passed up to BlackSand Industries Legal Department. The legal department came up with a two-fold settlement.
Kathy can spend one night in the cabin if she upgrades all the electrical and plumbing items in the cabin. They also reserved the ability to reexamine the issue should her tent happened to be destroyed by a meteor. That has happened to two previous Challengers ... And is a serious setback when they have to nap on park benches or a couch at the library when it isn't snowing and they cannot build an igloo ... 🤣
By the way ... She bought the property for 71,000 simoleons and could currently sell it for 215618 simoleons.
If you are wondering about the total lack of excitement on Kathy's face, it can be simply summed up in the fact she is yet to have harvested one of the elusive Life Fruits (she does have a life fruit plant in the ground, and it is at 'harvest stage).
To sum up the past two weeks ... The weather has been relentless. It has stormed almost all the time. The garden has frozen and unfrozen multiple times but essentially has remained barren of produce. Kathy is running out of the apples she had stockpiled and has been eating more saltwater fish lately.
A Few Important Milestones
For the most part Kathy has settled into a familiar grind, with a few days set aside for money making or working on her novels. She has also been knocking down her required Community service hours raking more leaves around town, and tutoring young people who show up around the GreenWire.
But ... On Wednesday of week seven, Kathy repaired her tenth plumbing fixture. This now means that any plumbing fixture she repairs from this point forward will never break again. This is important and I use it a lot, because it essentially means she can upgrade any plumbing fixture to 'self- cleaning' and when it breaks and she repairs it, it is like getting two upgrades for one. This becomes an ultimate time saver for plumbing items when they no longer need to be cleaned nor repaired.
She finished two romance novels, Just Friends (best seller) and Walk in the Rain (hit). At this point she has written six books (no flops, two hits, and one best seller). Kathy has made over 30000 simoleons in Royalties and is currently receiving 17206 simoleons in Royalties a week. She has also achieved the writing skill challenges becoming a Speed Writer and Romance Novelist. This makes writing novels faster, and with more hits or best sellers if they romance novels.
Although it is not an official rule of the challenge, I always have my challengers purchase upgrade one community lot. This means that not only do I get a Sim to add to a town after the challenge, I get a lot to add to any town as well in the future. Kathy picked the Shoreline Cabin in Hidden Springs, and it has been described in the previous post.
It was decided that Kathy could spend one night in the cabin (comfortable bed, warm and dry) if she upgraded all the electrical and plumbing fixtures in the cabin. Needless to say, she spent Saturday through Monday upgrading everything in the cabin, only taking a break to eat, sleep, socialize, shower and escape for a short while for a party at Sebastian's house. Anna Menon toured the upgraded cabin shortly after it opened again. She doesn't look too pleased about it, but honestly, Kathy doesn't really give a rat's rear what Anna thinks ... 🤣😂
On Wednesday of last week in Fall, Kathy spent most of her day with Catarina Vanderburg. Little Alexandria Vanderburg was born. On the following Thursday, Kathy got ready to close out the season with visit to the Fall festival and then a Feast Party at the Song's house. As her standard practice, she cooked a pumpkin pie for all the partygoers. Friday, she put in a solid day making money from cloning gems. Kathy made enough to secure what was necessary to purchase the remaining property around town she was interested in.
Kathy chose to spend Friday night at the cabin. She woke up the next morning and finished her latest novel enjoying the rest, and beautiful view the bedroom in the cabin offered.
Wondering what she was going to do for the rest of the Saturday, and the last day of Fall, she decided to purchase a bottle nectar (she had a wish to do so, and it paid 1500 Lifetime Reward Point ... 🤣) Not long after enjoying a glass Ryan Anderson and Bert Alto showed up at the cabin. Kathy then decided to go bowling at Eastpark Lanes.
While there she ran into Pierce Shawkti and Sebastian Vanderburg. She visited with most of the patrons and bowled a few games. Kathy had a few drinks at the bar there, then decided to head back to camp, and get some rest before seeing what Winter had to offer.
Yeah ... Kathy only has 14660 simoleons in the bank ... But she has over 2 million invested in properties around town. New properties she acquired over the past two weeks ... The Shoreline Cabin, Hidden Springs City Park, Hidden Springs Fitness Center (the big gym), Hidden Springs Research Center (where she conducts most of her science projects), and St. Invictus Hall of Knowledge (the public library and a previous challenge project completed by challenger Chris Harper).
Lifetime Reward Points Available: 84523 ... Having purchased everything to cover her basic needs, I haven't really decided what to purchase next ... 😆🤣😂
The season of jogging ... Kathy has been staying in shape and working on her challenges in Athletics. She has already achieved the Marathon Runner Challenge and is working on the Fitness Nut Challenge. She has more time on her now since gardening is out of the picture, and she has reduced her profit-making endeavors to a trickle (she is planning on stopping her career as a writer when she finishes her current novel). Not counting her investments or royalties, Kathy has more than 1.3 million simoleons in her bank account and will easily break Chris Harper's 112 Day Challenge record for money earned by the end of the challenge.
Instead of the traditional grind most challengers have pursued in the past ... Kathy is filling her time gaining exculpatory skills. She can often be found ice skating at the city park, enjoying the Festival Grounds, or even moonlight windsurfing.
Kathy has also enjoyed perfecting her inside skills as well ... Darts, pool, club dancing and bowling. She hasn't bowled a perfect game yet but has scored over 250 in a game.
Kathy has also spent a lot more time socializing than she had during the Summer and the Fall. Her pumpkin pies are still always a hit at the parties she attends. Kathy also goes out more often clubbing and dancing but has yet to accept a date with any of Hidden Spring's eligible bachelors.
Kathy has also wrapped up her Community Service hours. She finished her remaining hours off tutoring student or adults when the opportunities arise and upgrading all public facilities (plumbing and electrical). In her Handiness skill she has also achieved the Electrician and Plumber Challenge requirements ... Now she cannot be electrocuted fixing or tinkering with electronics, and any broken plumbing fixture she repairs will never break again.
The Plumber Challenge is one of the best ... Because it is a real timesaver. If your Sim upgrades plumbing fixtures to Self-Cleaning, it will save the time and effort of cleaning but allow the fixture to break. It takes less time to repair a plumbing fixture than it does to upgrade it to Unbreakable. Once your Sim has repaired 10 broken plumbing items, then what they repair after that will be Unbreakable and Self-Cleaning and your Sim won't spend any time cleaning or fixing them again. In a sense, you want 10 plumbing items to break ... 🤣😂
The week got off to a slow start for Kathy as she spent a good part of Sunday and Monday in the Library. The warmth and quiet helped her study and prepare for the coming Spring.
For most of the rest of the week Kathy focused on her fitness. The Gym was always busy, and socializing was easy. She also completed all the Athletic Challenges ... Adding Fitness Nut and Body Builder to the Marathon Runner she had already acquired.
She did take a few breaks for fun during the week when time allowed ... And yes, Kathy did bowl a perfect game wearing swimwear ... She had just earned the Daredevil Trait by gaining enough jock Influence ...😆😂
Kathy went to a Feast Party at the Song's house on Snowflake Day ... Made her traditional Pumpkin Pie ... But spent most of the rest of the time there playing with their new baby girl Victoria.
Later that evening ... She got busted by Keisha Wyatt while trying to tag the Greenwire Java Hut and Internet Cafe. Keisha drove her home, and fined Kathy 1000 simoleons. Kathy chose not to explain the fact she owns the Greenwire and should be able to paint it if she wants to.
Of course with all the Spaceships in the parking lot at the Police Station ... Kathy isn't really sure who is in charge of the Police Department anyway ... 🤣😂
Kathy is not even attempting to make money anymore ... She has already beat the previous record of 3.4 million set by Chris Harper. She will probably finish around 4.5 million by the end of Spring counting her existing investments and incoming royalties. Kathy is looking forward to getting to garden again in the upcoming season and hopefully harvesting the Life Fruit she needs to complete the challenge. She also has about 12 hours of Community Service left to fulfill, but that shouldn't be a problem in the remaining 28 days.
