Ain't Misbehavin'

It's Saturday and me and my brothers have a gig at this place again. This is my first time to sing almost the whole thing. They'll let me take little breaks while they mess around some, but I'm going to be singin ALOT.
I'm nervous. Of course I'm nervous!

I stand there watching my brothers warm up when HE walks in. I see him out of the corner of my eye.
He's been talking about coming to watch me all week. I kept telling him he didn't HAVE TO come, but he wouldn't hear of it.
He hasn't tried anything like he did last Tuesday since then. He asked me to sit with him in chemistry, so Camilla and I both went to sit at his table. It was a crowded table for a few days before Mr. Locke intervened. He separated me and Camilla. Now she has to sit with Tom along with a few others while I still sit with Rick. Mr. Locke is not Camilla's favorite person since that development.

Before I have a chance to go talk to him, I'm overcome with shock as DOROTHY walks in. What is that dumb Dora doing here? I never invited her. Did Rick?
I know that she could come anyway, but honestly, this place doesn't get much business. I don't expect many people to show up tonight.

My brothers start warming up as I notice a small problem. Small as in... me. I'm too short for the microphone.
This is embarrassing.

We open with "Anything Goes" because I want to get it over with. It's alot of words in a small space of time and I'm worried I won't remember them all. Rick smiles at me. I wink back at him.

Whoa. Mr. Locke?! HE showed up? And... this place is getting a little more business... a little more crowded... Rick, what did you do?
I look at him with my eyes wide and gesture to him in between songs about the size of the crowd that's forming. His face breaks out into a huge grin. I don't know whether to be angry or grateful for what he's done.
He's obviously trying to get on my good side.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Dorothy again, didn't I? Well, she stands there, right in front of me, the whole time. I bet she wishes she were up here, or is this too low-brow for her?

Things are going pretty good. I take a small break and hit the john. When I get back I see the waitress walk over into the hidden corner with a tray and a drink. So, there's yet another person in the corner over there. Well, good. Obviously they didn't come to hear us, but just to relax.
My brothers start up on "Ain't Misbehavin'", one of my favorites. I smile and start singing.
"No one to talk with
All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you
I know for certain
The one I love
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you"

While I'm singing, I see a man get up and walk out from the corner. He stops and watches us with his hands in his pockets. I can't really make him out because of the brim of his hat shading his face, but I don't worry about it.
"Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me"

The man in the back takes his hands out of his pockets, looks up and smiles. I recognize him... It's Mr. Cute Doctor-man!

I miss a cue as everything in the room fades out except him. Justice looks over at me, confused and wondering what's eatin me. I just shake my head a little at him and come in after the turn around.
"I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
Savin' my love for you"

I try to calm myself enough to finish the song as best I can. I just can't take my eyes off of him.

He smiles a small smile when he sees me looking at him.
"Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me"

I suddenly don't much like these lyrics now. I try to look at Rick instead of him, but it doesn't work much. Then, Mr. Doctor-man moves to stand with the crowd.

At least he's standing near Rick now. That makes it easier. I'm used to staring at Rick.

Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'

That dern song finally ends. Next, my brothers start up "The Man I Love", and I want to strangle Howie for picking it.

We do a couple more songs, and the gig is over. People cheer, and I want the earth to swallow me whole. Funny, it never does.
Mr. Doctor-man doesn't cheer. He just smiles at me.

Incidentally, I find another reason why Dorothy was standing so close the entire time. I think she has a crush on my brother Howie.
Sorry sweetheart, he's not for you.
A little after this, Darren walks up to me and asks about her. Then he goes to talk to her.

Dr. Marshall walks up to me after he makes his way through the small crowd.
"Gloria!" he exclaims. "I didn't know you could sing! That was incredible!"
I feel myself blush. "Thank you. Yeah, I sing with my brothers when it's not a school night." Ugh, I feel like such a kid saying that!

"You have a beautiful voice." he says simply.
A jolt of something like adrenaline shoots through me. I do my absolute best to hide it. "That's what my brothers say, but it's just a voice. Just happens to belong to me."
About this time, Darren gets slapped across the face. I wonder what he said? The other three guys laugh at him. What are brothers for, right? Besides, what's he doin' messin' with a girl my age?

"What was that all about?" Dr. Marshall asks me, talking about Darren.
I laugh. "Oh, Darren's always doing stuff like that. I have an ounce more respect for Dorothy now, and that's really saying something because I can't stand her."
He looks over at Darren getting chewed to the bone by Dorothy. Yep, she's definitely a soprano with those notes she's hitting. I turn around and notice Darren actually smiling like he's enjoying it. Weirdo.
I hear Rick laughing behind me. People seem to be entertained by the pair of them. I turn my head back around to Dr. Marshall.

"So," he asks me, "is this what you're planning to do after high school?"
I nod. "I'd like to, but who knows, right? I love it. And my brothers are meeting with Mr. Bumble from Vinyl Spins this week sometime. I hope all goes well with that."
"What about you, though?" he asks.
"Well, I'm too young ain't I? Mama and Daddy will have to look it over for me."
He speaks quietly as if really speaking to himself, "Oh yeah. That's right."
There's an enthusiastic voice suddenly behind me. "Gloria, that was fantastic!" Rick shouts. He grabs hold of my hand, spins me around and starts spontaneously dancing with me.

I laugh at his silliness, and start dancing along with him. I'm glad the gig is over. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it was a little nerve-wracking.

(The lyrics as I listed them was the way Ella Fitzgerald sang it.)
